I have dramaticcaly increased flow in my tank and have to put my powerheads in sub optimal places to keep sand from blowing around. Can I get some heavier, bigger grained stuff and cycle it? then add it? would love some advice. thanks!

LOL but that would mean I have to drain the whole damn thing :) What do people think of aragonite?

Mark you don't have to drain the whole tank, just siphon it all out with a 1/2'' tubing from your local hardware store. I have to say I love my bare bottom although I really like the look of sand.

Going bare bottom was the only way I could have all the flow I had in my tanks. No sand will really stay put. The thing with aragonite (cushed corals) if that is what you meant, is some people complain about nitrate issues using it do to all of the air pockets. Also, for certain sand dwelling critters, sometimes it is a bit too coarse for them. Just a few thoughts :)

I just drop some small/medium sized pieces of LR in the areas where my sandbed was getting blown away all the way down to the glass.. Once all the sand has stopped shifting, it seems pretty stable where it wants to pile up... Of course then you have deeper pockets to worry about buildup :)

jmo but i hate bb tanks it looks so incomplete kinda like the winter without snow a wedding without the ring and so on just my 2 cents though

i had a real good sand the last time i had my tanks up and it was aragonite and a good grade thickness it didnt hardly blow up at all with the current in my tank and it didnt cloud up my water at all like the sand i have now does, and its the same damn sand i bought the last time but its just alot thinnner

i bought it thinking it was the same dang thing biy was i wrong every trime a fish passes gas in the tank there is a cloudy hurricane of sand in the dang tank

im not sure what adding a thicker kind of sand to the tank will do for you but im about to do this to my tank also add my old sand bac in after i rinse it out real good a cup full at a time

surely it cant hurt i mean its all sand right

what difference would it make

just my 2 cents!!!

Hate is such a strong word... I love my bb tank it's so easy to maintain and I can throw as much flow at it as I want...:)

ok put it like this I feel the same way about bare bottom tanks as most people on here feel about people like me with a 125 gl tank wanting to put a leopard shark in it

It just shouldn't be done but just cause I dont like it dosent make it wrong just my preference thats all

2 add I have a 35 time an hour turn over rate for my 125 and my sand only blows when I stir it

Just my 2 cents

35x turnover is nothing. Try 70-80x turnover :D

With my budget and compared to my last turn over rate which was probaly around 15 to 20 times an hour its alot, and IMO 70 to 80 is over kill depending on the size tank for a 125 thats to much 4 me

You mean depending on what corals you have...I understand the budget as I'm on one too, so nice job at getting the turnover up it's important in any reef tank:)

my goal was to get about 45x turnover with my 55g mixed, but everything seems pretty happy right now so I will leave it at 35x for now. I just hate to see my MJ12s sitting there wating for me to use them for water changes, lol...

I love all the feedback

I agree and your right but I think having a bb tank limits you to not having scooter nets and gobys and stuff dont it??

I love those dang things to man I can't do witout those things

But if you like it I love it I hope your bb thrives for you but if you go bb dont you have to cover up the bottom of the tank so the reflection of your lights dont scare theme crap outta your fish

I had to cover the bottom of my tank on my qt tank

I would probably be better off bb actually though now that I think about it

I actually have a little neon goby but he's on the rocks more than the bottom of the tank. Yes I'm limited to most bottom dwelling fish. I don't have any reflection from my tank just the black stand. I see your point as well and I can say we agree to disagree.:D
