What Temperature is Your Tank?

What temperature is your tank, and do you need a chiller and/or heater to maintain that temperature? If you can try and elaborate on why you like to keep your temperature where it is....best growth? less disease?, etc. etc. etc......

Welp, I actually spent the last week and a half raising from 78-80F and am looking into a Ranco controller to keep things more static. I recentrly noticed a one to one and half degree swings in the middle of the night (prop tank in a room without direct heating) so I want a separate temperature probe so Im' not just reading heat right around the heater itself and dont really want to use titanium heat with separate probe. (only here would checking on a one degree temp swing at 3am be a perfectly normal action).

Anyone have a source for a dual Ranco for under $95?

Okay I cast my vote, but I'll have to qualify that 78 - 80 with "During what season?" When outside heat is not a problem then 78 - 80 is what I run, and that's using a titanium heater with a separate probe in the sump / refugium and a good old stick on thermometer in the tank itself just to be sure.

Never thought I'd have a heat problem in western Washington, but last summer (our first with the tank) we got up to 84 (and above?) more often than I would like. Fortunately there wasn't too much in the tank then and nothing seemed to suffer in the long run. I'm sure there will be more trouble this summer if I can't keep the heat down.

No specific reason for the choice of temperature. Info from books? LFS suggestion? Everyone seems to have a different take on this. Glad to see what people here think & do.

78-80 using a chiller. My place gets really hot especially in the summer, a chiller is needed to keep the levels consistent.

I am running about 77 +- 1 degree right now, no chiller. The tank is in the garage, so the lack of room heating is keeping it pretty cool. Actually need to move my other heater over from the smaller tank, but haven't yet.

I stay 79 ro 81 without a chiller unless you count the AC in the summer. We don't let the house get much warmer than 75. It does get warm on real hot days but until I get a chiller.....

77.4 - 78.5, but it's in the garage so it keeps the temp down. Last summer it was all I could do to keep it from going above 80.

i kept the temp at 78-79 without a chiller the house is always 70-75

mine usually is @ 80, might hit 81, in the winter time and the summer it might go up a bit, but air cond helps a lot
my tank is also covered due to wrasses so the temp rises due to that also
i havent had any problems as of yet with any sickness

I have two tanks so chillers were out unless i wanted to get a big one and do some fancy plumbing, so i removed one of the sliders in the living room picture window and istalled a home depot $400 a/c vertical 10,000 btu unit and filled in above with plexiglass. When the house gets up above 74 i turn it on and all is fine in the tanks and me too!!! i keep mine at 78 deg., and is use two heaters in the sump, each 1/2 the recommended size for redundeze and also if one sticks i hope i find out before it does any damage.

Summer is just around the corner and I am not certain if I will need to start saving up for chiller yet, but non the less I would like to start looking into them.

Any brands or models you fold would recommend or perhaps ones I should steer clear of?

i stick with 79 +/- 1. In the summer, i open the sump cover and door under the stand and run a fan constantly over the surface. It seems simple, but it seemed to be enough to keep the tank cool. there were about 5 times last summer that I had to add Ice, otherwise it was fine. I'd love to invest in a chiller or make my own, but that will have to hold off for a while.

I heard somewhere that Acros liked water temp around 80 degrees. I trusted the person that told me. That is where I try to stay 80-81 degrees.

Well I don't have anyting in my yank (lol..tank) and I don't turn my room heater on and I have the tank heater set at 80. And my window is always open..but the temp (in the yank) seems to stay around...84. Is that bad?

is you thermometer accurate? what type of lights do you have on your tank? glass hood? i have 250w halides on my 55 gallon and it never gets above 81. then again i have a 8" fan installed in the canopy to blow the hot air out. i check my temperature with a digital thermometer though because my 'floating' thermometer seems to be a little inaccurate.

My heater is on the opposite corner of my thermometer that is suction cupped to the side glass, than there is the hydrometer with the temp guage on it and I also got one of those stickers. So three readings. I only have the lights that came with the tank..its for freshwater.
