What type of carbon?

Reef Aquarium & Tank Building Forum

After reading this article and doing some research I've ordered from bulkreefsupply.com:

1 Gallon - 3 Pounds Premium ROX 0.8 Aquarium Carbon 000521
Deluxe BRS GFO and Carbon Reactor 204172
Sure Grip 50 (Up to and including 1/2" walls) 202266 pump mount for MJ1200

It should arrive tomorrow and the only question i have is about rinsing the carbon before firing up the reactor. Do i need to rinse it and if so can i just run tap water through it. or should i use RO/DI how many gallon and so forth?? Any input would be helpful.

ROX is pretty clean stuff but any GAC should be rinsed to remove any trapped gases and wet the GAC. It is fine to rinse it well with tap water and then a quick rinse in RO/DI. Make sure your water runs throghj the GAC first,NOT the GFO, BRS has it backwards. You need about 1/3 cup of ROX / 50 gal and about 1/2 cup of GFO / 50 gal.

However, are are you using GAC and GFO now and if so who's and how much ? Before you fire this reactor up

I am not using any GFO or GAC currently on this tank. This is the first time i am putting it on any of my reef tanks. Also I only ordered GAC I did not purchase and GFO. It's ok just to run carbon alone right?

Then cut the level by 1/3 for starts and bump it up each month till you get to 1/3 cup / 50 gals. Meaning, start with 1/3 cup ROX / 150 gals.

1/ 3 cup = ~ 15.5 teaspoons or .1 tsp / gal or 1 tsp / 10 gal for starts

Thanks Boomer my system is 55 gallons +- so I'll start with 5-6 tsp and work my way up to 1/3 cup over the next few months. This thread and your advice have been very helpful and I'm looking forward to running this reactor and seeing the magic happen. thanks for the invite to give you a call. I'll hold off unless i have any more questions. If you can think of any more advice for a carbon rookie feel free to post it or link a thread that already contains some good information. Thanks again.

Boomer, why do you want to start with less than 1/3 cup of ROX per 50 g and work your way up to 1/3 cup per 50 g over a couple of months? Thanks.

As currently, you system is high in organic nutrients and the corals need to get use to a lower nutrient level. If you strip the system to fast the corals *may expel their zoozanthellae and bleach out.

Oh, ok. That makes sense. Thanks Boomer. :)
