With all these threads about what got you into reefing and so on I thought it would be interesting to see where everyone started. Feel free to post pic's and if you wish you can post pic's of your tanks progression as it grew from tank to tank. I will get some posted shortly....but I started with a 12g and have gone up and down since.....went from 12 to 36....36 to 72.....72 to 60.....60 to 150. Next up is somewhere between 700 and 1000.

I left out my FW experience....that was just as bad. I started with a 20g, moved to 40....then 54 corner....from that to custom builty 80g before my tank was assaulted. I say this because we were living in Vegas at the time. We went to Cali for 2 days and during that time our apt was broken into....all the alcohol we had been storing for the party that weekend was drank and dish soap was thrown into my tank.

I started with a beta in a quart size glass vase. Yeah fresh water! He eventually graduated to a 30 gal tank with a couple tank mates. From there I started with a 55 gal SW tank. Added a 60 gal and 34 gal RSM. Since upgraded the 55 to a 75, upgraded the 60 to a 54 corner, yeah it was an upgrade. And added a 90 gal and the 30 gal FW has been turned into a SW frag tank. So to simplify it, I have running a 34 gal RSM, 54 gal corner, 75 gal, 90 gal and a 30 gal frag tank. AND...three fresh water planted tanks, 25, 40 & 55 gal.
I'm trying to figure out if there is anywhere in my house that would support a 300-500 gal tank.

wow.....maybe you can merge some of these to make room for the larger one. You know....there is a ton of room in your garage.

My first saltwater tank (first tank ever, actually) was a typical 29 gallon, pet store setup with an undergravel filter and HOB carbon deal, with dead coral decorations...this was very late 80's, maybe 1990. I shudder to think of the poor fish I kept (and mostly killed) in that thing...I recall a coral banded shrimp, a yellow tang and a mandarin goby, to name a few. So ignorant in those days...

My first reef tank was a complete custom deal, 75 gallon acrylic (1993)...here's a thread on it: http://www.reeffrontiers.com/forums/f14/little-nostalgia-52713/

Very nice....thanks for sharing. I too have killed my fair amount of fish and coral in my "newb" days.

My first saltwater tank was a converted freshwater 29g tank, then a 75g bow tank, then a 90, then a 125g, and after 14 years, I now have my current tank of 375 gallons,.see link under sig for pics. For now the 375g will have to suffice for my dream tank as I dont see me getting a larger tank anytime soon.

it is, but i would have like a 500g but the wall it is in was only so wide. :)

I am happy with what I have.

me too, and the best part is that all of it is in the garage..the only thing you see from the house side is the frame around the tank.

I started with a 10, went to the 20 long, then to the 75 w/ built in the back sump, and now on to a shallow 180 gallon dual octogon. Will have to look through my thousands of pictures later to find one of each.
Didn't mention all the freshwater tanks I had before and in between though. Still have my 100 with big cichlids and plecos.

I originally started with a 10g freshwater filled with goldfish (if only I had known how bad it truely was) But they lived pretty good because I was great with water changes.
Second tank I got was either a 40 or 55g I didn't know really. All I knew was I traded some Magic the Gathering cards for it and it became an Oscar tank. After moving to a new house my parent's forced me to get rid of it. Fast forward 3 years in the future and I came into a little money in a new house and bought a 29g Kit to do Fresh water again!

Then while I had that set up I found a 25g aquarium on craigslist for 30$ with Stand and Filters. I turned this into a Cherry Shrimp Tank

After having both of those for about a year, I merged them into a 56 column aquarium [
After having that set up, and having no issues I wanted a challenge so I decided to make a 10g Nano Saltwater, Which started the saltwater addiction

Now the saltwater is a 36 gallon bow which soon will be turned into a 50breeder once I get it drilled by someone!

(The Cherry Shrimp 25g)
(The Merged 56)
(The 10g Two months in)
