What's inbetween your tank and stand? I am almost done with the finish on my stand and have seen a few pics of tanks that have what looks like styrofoam inbetween the tank and stand. Pardon my ignorance but what is the purpose of this? My tank will rest on a solid surface (3 X 1/2" ply, glued together) and wondered if I am missing something critical here.

my tank sits directly on the stand.

I think its for glass tanks, since the frame on the bottom is not flush with the glass. Should stop the stress around the edge.
