What's the quietest and coolest pump??

I'm looking for an external pump that'll pump around 1000gph at 5'. I have a gen-x pcx40 that pumps real well but it's pretty loud. So I hooked up my iwaki 30(1100 gph model) and it's way quieter but it pumps about 200gph less that the gen-x. I'm looking at bigger Iwaki's or like a sequence dart. Are these quiet pumps with low heat transfer? Is there a better choice? Please let me know.

I have not had a problem with my Iwaki 55 RLT. I used to run my skimmer with it and it was very quiet. I don't really know if it is at 1000 gph at 5', but it's darn close. HTH

The dolphin ampmaster pumps are extremely quiet. The sequence pumps look like they are built the same, so they are probably very quiet as well. Any Iwaki pumps above the 30 have cooling fans so they are louder.

Pan World pumps are suppose to as good as the Iwaki, haven't heard much about them tho.

Try a Sequence Dart.

I love Sequence Pumps. they were originally designed to pump sludge off of barges, and they are super quiet. Just don't get the Durango. You want the Dart though, it is awesome, I have an old one laying around from prehistoric days, I use it to mix my salt now.

When I first started looking for a good external pump I contacted this pond place here in TX and went up there. There the guy showed me a Sequence that had been running outside in the elemets on his pond for over 5 years straight. It looked like hell too, all rusted and plants all growing around and over it. But there it sat pumping away.

Ever since then I have loved the sequence pumps. I am sitting next to four Hammer Heads right now and the only thing I can hear are the fans that are running over my lights to keep them cool....

Ok If you want quiet go with a Small Dolphin...

My Sequence Is louder than my dual Beckett... Of course they say its not normal and are sending me out a new one but I have yet to see that... I have a dolphin 3600 that is Dead quiet... You can not really hear that thing even if you put your ear right up to it...

The Posidens are quiet as can be But I hear they put some heat into the water...

In all honestly my Seq Hammerhead is much louder than my pcx100 and my pcx40 with bad bearings...

yeah hopefully... Its pretty noisy... I was a bit Dissappointed with the noise... But supposidly my replacement will be here sometime this week so well see...

and I was surprised on the other hand on how quiet my barricuda was. i figured it would be noisey and it's quiet. i do have it mounted on a vibration pad which probably helps some.

1000gph at 5' head says Mag12 to me. It can be run inline and submersed. I have been using one as my return for a year now and I really like it. It is much quieter than my ampmaster and sedra on the skimmer. It is also less money.

Mag12 says an extra 2-3F added to the tank if you ask me..

I got electrocuted by a mag once.... since then I get kinda' twitchy when I think about using it as a fixture in a tank.

I also use a Mag 12 as a return - runs very quiet. The Ampmaster 3000 on my closed loop is silent, as well.

Ampmasters are real quiet, and have minimum heat transfer.

The Seq Darts, have been quieter, have minimum heat transfer, and seem to have greater pressure, and are a bit smaller.

The Barracuda's (experience with 3 so far) are not silent, suck up a lot of electricity- but move a ton of water.

For 1000g at 5' perhaps consider a RIO Hyperflow. Can be mounted externally or internally - and produces a ton of water - under pressure with very little power consumption.

At 5' you might also be able to use a Quiet One - Which run silently, but may add some heat.


The Red Dragon - appears to be a great pump - I have been able to play with one -- Dead Silent - Minimum heat production -- But you could pretty much buy all the above mentioned pumps for the same price - and availability of the Red Dragon is still an issue.
