Where Im at as of this morning - PICS added

Picked up about 14lbs of liverock and some substrate (just enough to cover the bottom of a 10g), and was donated a damsel along with some water from a very kind UncleJack :) Put it all in the 10g with a powerhead and heater- my 36w CP light, nano powerhead and filter come today. I wouldnt ever add a fish to a new setup, but the only anything in the tank came directly out of the same tank the fish came from.

reading are:

Nitrites 40 (eep!)
Nitrates 0
Ammonia 0
PH ~8.5

I figured the nirtates would be high if the nirtites are:?: Nitrites yesterday were 20...thoughts??

Sounds like it is cycling which is good, let it go some and mature, it will eventually level off!

I figured it would be pretty much cycled given I transplanted everything but half the water!

Once everything hits 0, how long should I wait before adding a shrimp and/or a feather duster?

Once everything is at zero you are good to go with adding livestock. Just go slow. I would have some saltwater made and maturing as you wait for the cycle to complete. If you get a nitrite or nitrate spike you might need to make a quick water change.

Looks cool. Keep testing your water for a while and watch the trend, if Nh3, No2, No3 are headed down you are doing great. Any time you stir things up or take them out of the water you can see some die off or a small spike.
