Which pump??

These are the pumps on Marinedepot. I am looking for a good return pump for my 90 gallon and also a separate pump for the oceansmotions I am planning on running on the tank. What should I get??? I am looking for strong flow for a SPS tank. Thank in advance for any help!

i can only speak from my own experience,
but i have a pondmaster mag12.
it has been a trouble-free, low noise pump.
these pumps tend to carry a good reputation on these forums.

In my eperience, i use Iwaki, Gen X, and Mag pumps. I have been using this pumps for years now and they're are very reliable.

I like Dolphin Ampmaster Series and Sequence 5000SEQ series. Both pumps are fairly effient on energy, Usually quiet, and both Manufacturers have been good to me as far as customer support.

I had an Iwaki 55 that pumped great but was so noisy I replaced it with a Velocity T4 titanium. They changed the company name on those but I think they are the same pump. It also pumped great, was virtually silent, but heated up the water fiercely.

So, I pulled out my wallet again and bought a Gorman-Rupp 520. I absolutely love it. It is quiet, my chiller doesn't come on nearly as much, and there are parts available at Champion Lighting and elsewhere if something breaks. G-R makes a huge number of industrial pumps (check out their website), and customer service is also great. I also have a small G-R (model 410) that I have run for over 3 years without any problems except the O-ring leaked after storing it 2 months. O-Rings NW on Aurora in Seattle fixed me up, and for free!

Sounds good Oscapus... Just checking out all of my options. Haven't heard a reply on the Sequence pumps. Are their pumps any good??? Is there one pump that someone could so "that is the best pump you can get"??? Does that pump exist or is more of a personal preference?? Thanks!!

Thanksgiving has slowed down the delivery of my pump. I am waiting for my pump back from Sequence. I have watched Sequence pumps in the past that were very quiet. I will let you know my thoughts when I get mine back.

Thanks Ed! I am trying to get a list of everything I need to finish off my 90 and pumps are one of my main needs. After the move I really want to set it up so I can start cycling my tank.

I have 2 ampmaster pumps and both are quieter that the powerhead running my skimmer. Awesome pumps.

I have a 90. i dont think you want less that 1000 gph. if your gonna tee it off, id go 1500. JMO

I was thinking of doing something like 4500 for the return. and mabye 5K or more for the CLS since The CLS will be running an oceans motions 4 way and it can take up to like 8K. Do y'all think that will be adequate flow??? Is there anything else I could do to avoid putting powerheads into the tank??? It will be barebottom and SPS. Thanks for the help so far!

Which oceansmotion are you buying? If you're going with the Squirt don't buy anyting above 1200 gph! I had to open up the port on my drum because I installed a blueline HD70 on my oceansmotion Squirt, even with the Bypass wide open the pump is to strong! Not all pumps are created equal! A mag 1800 *1800gph* vs a blueline HD70 *1750gph* both a zero head .... the blueline blows away the mag hands down! I don't know how Danner figures out the GPH's but I'd be willing to bet its not even close to what they say!

Welcome to reef frontiers Mike! Thanks for the heads up on the pumps... I am going to run the 4 way on my 90. I might eventually get the squirt for a Prop tank. How do you like how the squirt works?? The 8 and 4 way are the same concept so I'm curious. Thanks again!

The squirt is a nice little unit, But I'd go with the full size 4 way knowing what I know now! I've got the squirt set up on my 90 gallon and to be honest, I’m somewhat disappointed with it ... don't get me wrong ... it's well built and works great as long as you don’t try to exceed around 1200 gph *depending on what brand pump you are using*. Paul from oceanmotion *Great guy to deal with BTW* designed it for nano reefs and in a nano set up, I’m sure it rocks! Again this my opinion on the squirt, take it with a grain of sea salt As far as pumps go, I originally set up a mag 12 on the oceanmotion and found that it was not enough flow for my liking so I ordered a mag 18. This pump leaked at the intake base *common for mags so I’ve been informed* and again lacking flow, So then I went all out and bought this Blueline HD70 ... this pump puts out water BIG TIME! so much that it over powers the magnets on the squirt! So once in awhile you'll get a "THUMP" from the drum disengaging the magnets as it tries to index the next port! I now understand that the heavy duty 4way is direct drive and does not have that issue. Good luck on your choice of pumps ... If you want my opinion on pump choice for a 90 gallon tank, I'd strongly suggest the Iwaki MD55RLT, Gen-X Mak4 or the Blueline HD55 ... I like the blueline myself ... it's powerful and its quiet!

Are you thinking 4500GPH as your sump return? 5000GPH through 4 3/4" outlets?

Is that bad??? I am so unfamiliar with plumbing it isn't even funny. I want slow flow throught the sump for good filtration but a Really High GPH pump for the OceansMotions Heavy Duty that I am planning on using on the tank.

I thought your post said 4500gph through the sump. 4500 is way to much.
I'm not to sure about the four way but I dont think they are all open at once. Your not going to get 5000gph through even if they were.
You just dont want to get more pump than your plumbing can flow, waste of pump, money and electricity.
