I have noticed white spots or more like little specks on the glass of the tank. I thought awhile back I read something about this.

Does any one have an idea what these white specks are?

Hello,

I get, and am getting more and more, pink and white specks growing on my glass as well. I have to assume (hate that word) that it is a corraline growth and doesn't come off. I have been using that purple up liquid and so.... maybe its a case of be careful what you wish for....smile. I have been told it is a sign of a healthy tank...hope so.

do the specks move? if so, they are likley "pods"...beneficial microfauna...

They could also be tiny little feather dusters. I had a TON of these in my old 20g. They were tiny, white circular specs, but if given a closer look had little red dusters living in them.

mmmmm, these are more like oval or oblong looking and just white and I can not tell if they are moving.

Do they look like sesame seeds? They are nerite snail eggs.

Heres a pic from the Coral/Invert Photo Gallery.

thanks for the picture, no they are all over the glass of the tank front and sides.

they are very tiny and some are round while other are not.

When I do a cleaning and water change I am wondering if I should clean the glass or let them be?

idgy - here is a pic of Spirorbid Polychaetes (thanks again albert for contributing the pic for our gallery)

If they aren't these, you will find them soon enough. They appear to be small spirals....very small, but you can make out the spiral shape.

I am wondering if they aren't copepods, which will be tiny specks - if you get out a magnifying glass, you may be able to see if there are antennae. There are some magnifyed images in this article: 'Pods: Delicious and Nutritious by Adelaide Rhodes (one of our sponsors, too :))

I have white spots too!

I've had my tank setup for about 2 years and about 6 months ago I started getting white spots, tiny white spots on back glass and rock. I guess not on the front or sides because I clean it once a week. Can't make out anything moving in them. I'm thinking they're barnacles but I don't see movement. Any ideas?

I have small white spots in my tank as well. They are on the glass, rock, powerheads, etc. I started noticing them when I started adding liquid calcium to my tank.

tomfri - spirorbid polychaetes, like peca pictured are very small. In my tank, I can only see the spiral - and don't see the "feathers" coming out of the tube. The hydroid jellyfish pictured in jamiehill's post is also common in a newer system. I had them in my nano, but have since disappeared.
