ther is a film floating on the surface of the tank cant get it out with a brine net. is it good bad or just plankton?

just did all tests and everything is ok other than 20 no3 i know its high. oh and 1 clown fish has some tiny blk spots on him is this normal. kinda looks like he has seizures or spaz attacks idk.

How's the surface agitation in your tank? Sounds like the result of stagnant water on the surface...

I get a film on the top of my tank. You can disperse it by aiming a powerhead for some surface agitation maybe.

What I usually do (maybe once a week) is block my main drain (herbie system, full syphon) and let the secondary drain suck all the film off of the top and into the sump.

It is just a thin film of protein and food crap I think. Probably good to keep it under control though, so the tank gets properly aerated.

i have power head on each end of stank water is far from stagnet. i have a 60x turnover rate atm

Well, thats my best guess. I am also at 60X turnover in my tank. I do not have powerheads aimed at the surface though, but tons of water movement (2 large controlable tunze, a small controllable tunze and a non controllable tunze.) I get the same film and that is how I deal with it. What I stated above is what I have always assumed it to be. I figured it builds up due to my herbie drain, which is why I flush it down my backup drain when I see it building up.

Any chance to get a pic? I know with my tanks, I was far from anything forming on the surface. One tank I had a coast to coast overflow and about 105x turnover rate which I got great surface skimming as well as surface agitation. If you can, post a pic so we can see what's going on. Might be able to spot something. :)

i just raised my powerheads up a lil to cause more surface agitation. seems to have gone away or just mixed in the tank. skimmer should catch it.

Well that's the whole idea. Either a skimmer or a filter sock of some sort to catch it. Also, the increased surface aggitation, helps with gas exchange. I made sure the top of my tank's looked like surfing water.

I'm going to have to dig around for pictures of your tanks. This I have to see LOL

Lol! I'll have to find you a link to the 38 gal I had. If I don't get to a pc before I get off, I'll send you a link when I get home. :)

Good to get rid of the film. It reduces the amount of light getting into the tank, as well as reducing gas exchange (as mentioned earlier).
Overflows are great for getting rid of stuff that wants to float to the surface anyway.

Here you go man...Just a few of the 38 gal

4 nozzles up top as well as 4 nozzles down low on 2 closed loops then one return so 9 nozzles total. You can see the external coast to coast overflow in the back. This was a test run after re-doing the closed loop. The return is the lockline out front without the nozzle on it. Ran a straight nozzle first then switched to a flare later. Total flow was 950 gph return and 2 external pumps for the closed loop both rated just over 1,500 gph each.

Surface aggitation

The tank. All local corals.

:hail: You are the king of flow, we are not worthy :biggrin1:

That tank looks great

By the way no fair being able to get coral that easy, that has to be cheating. If I tryed local I'd have to do a cold water tank. Hum, maybe someday

Haha! Well not really cheating as I only harvested frags. Don't want to destroy the reefs plus it isn't technically legal to remove actual corals. Fish on the otherhand, no limit! :D

Don't worry I won't tell

Funny its the oposite here. Take all the nem's, coral, and inverts you want, but if you don't have the permit heaven help you if you take the fish / shellfish

Lol! Well, we have laws protecting crawfish at certain parts of the year and then by size as well as the grouper, but other than that, not much else. I think brain coral is the most protected coral, but honestly, no-one really is into saltwater reefkeeping here so big issue of a lot of reef hacking going on. They actually don't care if you remove coral as they never check boats for it. It's just something in the law books that is just ignored. I still never removed whole corals and just harvested frags etc. :)
