someone please smack me and set me striaght

If your willing to wait another week or two I'd be happy to come by and do it on behalf of the RF regulars. :)

Ben, you are confusing two different masses (weights)
The mgs of actual active ingredients, and the mgs of the tablet as in tablet size. One 23 mg tab is good for 380 gallons. "These tablets are just under 1 gram each and contain 23mg of Milbemycin Oxime"

Don't worry about a tablet not having the active ingredient mixed well, that is false. Large batches of the medication are mixed up in lieu of single tablets. When it is labeled 23 mg, that is what it has.

Consider me virtually smacked - thanks Mike - I needed that. In my defense, it's an easy mistake to make if you don't have the original box that it came in. I have a couple pills I got from Jan and the packaging of those individual pills just says 23 mg (nothing about 1g). This makes perfect sense now to what Don was saying about shaving the pills to size and Sue's word of caution. Hopefully this painful back and forth discussion will prevent someone else from going through the same headache as I have. :) :) :)

Duane, put the boxing gloves away my friend. See ya in a week though - I got approval from the ole' lady to move forward w/ the plan!!!!!

Is your tank a 55? If so I'd just use a 1/3 of a big dog pill and call it good.

Don

Indeed. I have a larger than average sump though.. 45 gallon sump a little over half full. But, I have a LOT of liverock, I mean probably more than you'd ever think could fit in a 55 gallon.

I was thinking a 1/3 or 1/4 is what I'd try too.

one more question... Have all of you had good luck just doing the interceptor dosage once, or did you follow the 3 seperate dosage regimine at a week a part?

Once has always been enough for me. Remember to disolve in hot rodi water first and you will get a full dose for the full time period.

Don

Ben!! You're going ahead with your in-wall project??? Congrats! :D

Hey, if you want some brand new closed loop pumps and plumbing, I can fix you right up! :D

ha ha.. Big smile.. indeed... I got approval on my rough budget from the boss. So as not to get off topic though, I'll start another thread on that once I put together a basic parts list & some plans :D I don't want to get excited yet b/c you never know how it'll turn out, but as of this moment, I have approval to move forward!:D PM'd you about pumps & plumbing.

Just wanted to verify the link and the 1 tab = 380g dosage. I dosed a 38g tank, so I had to guess at what 1/10th of a pill was. There's no doubt I WAY overdid it. I also took a huge hit in the pods, so I'd be thinking about that if I were you. And three treatments for me, because I didn't ever want to have to do it again.

Fellow club members have dosed triple dosage (3 pills in a 380, ironically) without ill effect, other than what's supposed to happen (all the crustaceans perish).

Thanks Sherman!

Update:
I did somewhere between 1/3 and 1/4 of a pill. Ground it up and put it in some boiling hot RODI water (thanks Don - it smelled like beef boulon :D yummm). After letting it cool, I poored it in the tank. I turned off the skimmer & carbon. I collected all of my hermit crabs before hand and put them in QT, and was able to get my little acro crab out, but couldn't get my 2 cleaners out - i tried forever. It's been 6 hrs and so far no casualties except the red bugs. I'm going to try to get a magnifying glass tomorrow to see what, if anything, is remaining.

I appreciate everyone's advice. I'm looking forward to getting rid of the guys once and for all.

I think I will try a second and third dose - like you said Sherman, just want to be done with them once and for all. So looks like everyone will have to stay in QT for a little longer.

Signing off to go turn back on my skimmer, carbon, and do a water change. :)

Question: Do I have to change my carbon each time I do a dose?

Boiling hot water?? I hope you didn't destroy the chemical. Most pharmaceuticals do not survive such extremes. Keep an eye on the bugs and everything else. You might need a water change and a second go at it with medication simply dissolved in warm water.

ahhh crap... there's virtual smack #2..Thanks Mike. I'll take a closer look in the morning w/ a magnifying glass. I figured the hoter, the better for disolving, but I didn't even think that it would eat up the active ingredient.

I'm all finished with a 15 gallon water change and it's off to bed for me.

Are the bugs supposed to turn white when they die? I didn't notice them turning white.

I did turkey baste and saw a couple fall off at the 6th hour.

I turkey-basted the frags I got from you and saw a few red specs fall off...I couldn't see if there were any still on the coral though, and I wasn't sure what the red specs were either. Just thought I would report.

Update: Couldn't find any red bugs and I searched for a good half hour. That's good news! Don is going to help me out to ask the experts if the boiling hot water would've retarded the active ingredient a bit. I know at least it worked a little bit b/c I don't see them any more. I think either way, I'll do a second dose in a week just to make sure. It's actually a big production to make up so much water, so I'm still on the fence of whether or not to do a third or not. I guess it's better safe than sorry, but it is a lot of work.

I did another 15 gallon water change this morning, which equals just under 50% in 12 hrs. I've always bee scared to do this much, but guess everything turned out ok.

Acro crab made it to QT - he's safe & sound hosting a powerhead. The two cleaner shrimps made it through the dip - I'll try throughout the remiander of this week to see if I can catch them before dip #2.

I'd say this was a success!

that's gotta be them! yeah!

Update: still no bugs seen since dip #1. Decided to do a second round today just in case there were any eggs that didn't get hit. I don't think there will be a round #3. it's a lot of work to do all that water changing. Again, couldn't catch the cleaner shrimps although I tried and almost caught one this time. the acro crab is still in QT as are the hermit crabs. Carbon is running and the skimmer is functional again. 15 gallon water change.

I noticed some of these buggers on the purple acro I got from you about a month ago. I brought it into work and put it in my 3 gallon tank. I hadn't noticed them until I got it into this tank.

Evidently sexy shrimp feed on red bugs because I have seen the numbers go way down in the last week. There are only a few left. When I put the frag in the tank the shrimp immediately went to work cleaning it off. That was how I noticed the bugs. I was wondering what they were getting into. While this wouldn't be an effective means to control them in a large tank it has worked well here.

muy interesante.. wish I could keep those sexy little guys in my tank, but I'd probably loose them. natural food source for them do you know?
