Will CPR hang-on refugium work over a sump?

Does anyone know if these hang-on refug will work on a sump where the water level is 8" from the top? If not why? Also are they worth the price or is a DIY a better idea? I don't want anything fancy, just a flow-thru box to house some sand and macroalgae. I am looking at the large model for my 120g system.

Never used one, but going on the pics I've see of them, they seem to pump water from the tank into the hang on fuge on one side and then the water drains out of the other end. The only potential problem I could possibly see is it may be a little noisey with water falling back into your sump with the water level being 8 inches down, not to mention possibly adding tons of bubbles to the sump that can be transferred back to the tank. Easy fix would be to just extend the output with a piece of pipe down to where the water level sits in your sump to prevent the splashing. Also, you may have to extend the length of the hose (or whatever they use to get water from the pump to the hang on) so it can sit in the water in your sump 8 inches down because if I remember correctly, that pump doesn't sit very low. Hope that made sense and I'm picturing the hang on properly:p. I guess if I'm wrong, someone else will chime in. Good luck:)

do you have room in the sump to build a fuge - lay sand and macro algae & have a light over top? I was thinking about a hang on the back cpr fuge to attach to my sump too, but those suckers are expensivo, especially when you add the lighting cost on top of the fuge itself.

FWIW, I ended up just adding the same stuff (sand, macro, and even a little left over live rock) to the bottom of one of the chambers in my sump and added a lamp overtop for about a quarter of the price..

If you can score a cool deal on one though, go for it. The certainly look neat. then again, sumps are probably less about looks and more about filtration, so I guess it depends what your after.

I have one on the back of my 55. I do think you could use it on a sump, even with the water 8" from the top. I'd try to plumb the outlet from the fuge down into the water, otherwise it's going to be noisy. You may want to upgrade the pump that comes with the fuge, since you'll be pumping it up several inches higher than it's made for. I think mine came with a crappy little Via Aqua pump. Maybe a MJ 1200 would work better.

I guess if the inlet and outlet of the refug were lengthen so that they both touch the water level in the sump, everything should be just fine. I may also need to upgrade to a larger pump but we'll just wait to see.

Question about the refug outlet, is it an overflow style (like AC500) or is it a tubelar, pipe-like?

If you want one of these, I am selling my unused Aquafuge. PM me if interested, and let me know your zip code so I can check on shipping. Thanks

The whole idea behind a hob refugium is that the copes and amps get swept over the side and into the tank without the chance of being chopped up by the return pump,to hang it on your sump would be useless in my opinion since tthey dont have enough space tto grow enough algae for nittrate and phosphate removal via cultivation:badgrin:

I don't understand this part. Hanging the refugium on the sump instead of the tank doesn't affect it's size.

I think he’s (ecobalance) referring to the overall size of the HOB refugium in general, which I don’t completely agree with... IMO, I think any form of nutrient export regardless of size is better than none.;) And about the pump puree of “copes” and “amps”... I’ve seen large mysid’s crawling around in a UV filter before... How do you think they got there?... Magic? ;)
