Will these lights work?

Jiddy go to ebay and check out cool touch lighting. I have seen the systems in operation and they are awesome. look under home and garden then pets then fish then metal halide. You will like them. Good stuff. Steve

Sodium bulbs won't work, but if the fixture has a mogul socket you can put in whatever halide bulb you want. HOWEVER - 1000 watts is incredibly overkill, and totally unecessary unless you have an 8' deep tank!

Yeah, I agree, sodium bulbs are not meant for aquaria, not even freshwater. They're normally used in either hydroponics or soil-based greenhouses for encouraging blooms. They're effective at this because of their high levels of red in the spectrum. There are specialized bulbs with more green and blue, but I doubt that's what comes with that system. As for the wattage, 1000W is really only useful in large square tanks where you want a lot of spread-out light from one source. Also, keep in mind that a 20K bulb in that size will cost nearly $300.

I checked out that site Brad and its pretty nice, im still thinkin about T-5's, sure would be nice to find a place that sold the bulbs with the fixture, instead of another $250

Jiddy, ever thought about using an IceCap 660 with VHO's?

You can retro these fairly cheap, & you get larger range of lamps, proven through years.

Got a cordless drill? These retros are typically easy to install, they just don't look as clean but you can usually get more bang for the buck, also you have a great web site for tec. support!

Hey Jiddy, if you have a tape measure and a drill, we will walk you thru the retro fitting of lights. Its easy man. Here is a photo of a very short canopy I retroed with P.C. bulbs. Easy man, Easy. I will also post photos of retroing in MH as soon as they get here. Steve

Jiddy,
I just recently saw a friends coral propagation set up in his home...its all lit by VHO's....I was very impressed to say the least. He's growing these corals for sale out his home, only by VHO lighting, so they are a very viable alternative to MH's...
After seeing his set up, I got off my butt and started messing around with my IceCap 430 VHO ballast. I have NO experiance with electrical type stuff, and this caused me to wait so long to get this done...
I went to Lowes and asked one of their employee's about it, ( I also brought in all the parts so they knew what they were dealing with) I was really amazed at how easy it was to get done. Seriously...it took me about an hour to do.

The intimidation factor was the toughest thing to get over. After that, its all down hill.

If you want, I can show you how I did it with all the pics I took...
