I understand that the principle of design unity, shows organized things arranged in a composition or things that belong together. I'm thinking about doing a coral reef (not the fish, but the corals all together) so since I have an aquarium at home, I could do it from there. So my question is, would that show unity? If I paint them really close. If it is not a good idea, what is a better idea I could do?Thanks in advance.

If I could paint or draw lol I always wanted to do something as in a painting of the coral reefs with some of animals in a certian area in the shape of a flat map. if that makes any sense. like figi acros and what not aussi acans ect red sea.

Could draw a flock of birds in formation. Or dolphins. Or flowers in a field. I think corals on the reef would be fine.

I'm afraid I don't understand the context. Are you painting the back of your aquarium, or is this a school project? You could surely have a fine composition and a wealth of colors to choose from with a reef-themed painting. If you are looking for some tricks to bring the aquascaping together and add depth to the aquarium, you could play with lighting and drawing a background using an extreme perspective.

Basically, you are looking for the aspects of the design (color, composition, motion, rhythm) to create a living symbiotic relationship on your canvas. A painting with a good sense of unity would not have one element overpowering the rest, but complimentary elements which exist in harmony. In this respect; Yes, a reef scene would make an excellent example for unity. Just be sure to rough out some sketches first. ;)

Google images great barrier reef and you'll get an idea how to paint a reef that looks close to nature
Then use your corals in your tank for reference on how to paint the right detail of the corals and fish.
