Zero edge aquarium

I once had a 90 aga with a CPR overflow lose it's prime and it became a zero edge aquarium. The new carpet in the living room became it's collector. Was not quite as fun as your current plan.

Twice the algae scrapping... But really sweet lookin! Wouldnt be able to use a magfloat type scrapers either.

I'm about 99% sure I'm going to go for this project. I am having thoughts about going three sided after talking to the wife. I can leave that for a last minute decision since the drains are on the end it really wouldnt change much.
Also I see a problem with the return system. I could use a couple tru unoin check valves and just make sure they are clean and working. I could also use a glass tulip return but that would force me to have a closed loop since the tulips can only handle about 500gph. The tulips may also break the surface which I think would effect the top down viewing.
Just guessing but I would think about 25 or 30 times turnover would be about right for this shallow of a system. I think 14" deep with 3/4" acrylic is about the max height. It really would just be a over glorified 60g aquarium.

How do the actual Zero Edge aquariums do the returns? You mentioned the check valves, but do they just pop up through bulkheads? If you did three-sided you could do returns on the back wall with a siphon break built-in.

The problem is you will break the surface unless the returns are very low. Zero edge just uses a bulhead stuck in the bottom. I may build it with no returns then just try the glass tulips. If it ruines the view then I can always punch the bottom.

I've always liked the look of the Zero Edge aquariums. The only ares of concern about these tanks that I've heard about are temp control, evaporation, and algae management...
