Hello fellow zoa keepers, long time. Was just looking for some really good zoa/paly discussion other than names, pictures and IDs? Anyone up for it, and where is everyone?

Everyones here...lol. Lots of people to talk zoas and palys. I myself have been reading about zoas and palys and there difference and I still can't tell them apart.

I looked, and there's one member here, me, 7 guest and I hear crickets.

PS. It takes a village.

Haha, too quiet for you here is it?
I am keeping a lot of zoas and palys.
wouldnt mind a good learning discussion on them.
unfortunatley between 5am & 6pm I'm on the road and at work. Only check in a few times a day.
I'd like to know more about their needs to keep them healthy and multiplying.
As would everyone, I'm sure. What is everyone doing and feeding to keep them growing?

Mucho your aquarium is amazing! I am not sure what it looks like now but wow!!! I have several zoas and palys as well. I feed my tank twice a week with Phyto and Oyster feast. I just switched over to LED's 3 weeks ago so I will see how it effects their growth and what they seem to like more. I was running T5's and they seemed to enjoy the light and they were higher up and had moderate flow. I moved them down a little further for the most part when I switched over to LED's. I have several frags that are showing great growth and others that open and are full but are not multiplying at the rate others are.

I have many zoas and palys , and some didn't grow much till I fragged them. then they took off. Some of the ones I have didn't grow very fast under MH lighting and now I have t5's and they seem to like it more. I feed my tank with Rods reef food, and I see the polyps getting food and eatting. But I also have some that seem to be kinda melting away even though all the others are doing great.

Updated information and pictures of your system would be nice. Are you still running compact fluorescent lighting?

It would be great if all those people would show up...sounds like a plan.

That's great my friend. Care to share what you have been reading and what you've learned?

I have a link that I will dig up to share with you that will shed lots of light on your question. I hope it helps.

You see, that would have been a great thread to start to share what you have learned or read. It lights a spark for others to read it, learn from it, provide feedback as well as to encourage them to create their own thread.

Thanks for the reply BTW.

Hey thanks for the welcome.

So are you keeping frags, small colonies or mothers? Not concerned with names or pics.

You are concerned about what to feed them, captive care ( husbandry), feeding and how to get them to proliferate in your tank right? Wow, that's 4 good threads or one great one. Can I make one small request? Could you create a new thread and ask those questions so everyone can contribute? I am more than confident there is a wealth of reefing knowledge here and obviously a lot of good questions.

Hey thanks Ak-reefer, but my tank is old news. I really want to hear about what you guys are doing and your achievements in reefing.

I see you're feeding Phyto and oyster feast. How did you decide on those to feed and your schedule?

We were just discussing LEDs on another sight. Tell us why you switched from T5s to LEDs?

I see at least 2 threads there that would be great threads to start or provide feedback to someone else who will hopefully create a compatible thread.

I see endless potential here for some great threads.

Thanks for sharing that.

Hello Bill, when you say they didn't grow till you fragged them, how did you frag them? What was the size of the frag, how long had you owned it?

When you transitioned from MH to T5s, you said your polyps seem to like it better. How so? Tell us what changes you observed and what do you indirectly attribute it to?

Through a series of Q & A, there is always a reason why polyps melt away. I am going to post something tomorrow on this, but would love to hear more from you. Or, you can always create a thread to share this and solicit feedback from everyone. We need to get this forum rolling again. Think we can all chip in and do it?

Hey man, long time. I'm doing great......how about yourself?

Hah, yes, very old news LOL, I see you've upgraded.....awsome.

My friend, what's with the crickets.......there are dozens of topics to discuss as it relates to zoas and palys. Or am I just being overly zealous?

I'm doing OK.
I happen to be taking a break from zoanthids. Not forever, but for now anyway.

I still look at them and get that old feeling.

I was talking to someone else tonight about reasons polyps melt away. Could bacterial infections be an issue. If so how do we treat for it as a cure and a preventative measure?

I've had random small colonies melt away too, for noooo reason. Yellows I have always had troubles with. Right now I have 2 separate frags and they both have not spawned in 3 months. They're groups of 9 and 6.

Anyway I do feed phyto probably once a week maybe every other week.

My pink and gold zoas grew like wild fire until I fragged them. Now not really much growth and the 2 frags I did have 15plus heads. So idk what happen there.

As for my green goblins. They still grow like wild fire. Fragged or not they grow a couple heads a week :) good traders :)

As for the other 5 or so different zoas palys they grow reallll slow I'd like to speed them up. I've seen one or two threads that people posted on different site that show a years growth and their huge!

My purple gorilla nipples have 4 heads and have had 4 heads for 6 months now. Still no new growth :( I've moved and moved and finally think I found a good spot so hopefully they'll sprout.

I have a 55 gallon with 4 t5s two actinic one white and one purple

Going LEDs soon I hope. :(
Hope this helps and I'm curious to see everyone's growths or any secrets for success :)

I love Zoa's :) My favorite coral.

I am still learning how to best keep them but am having pretty good luck. I have about thirty frags of different types mostly no names but I thought they were beautiful so I took them home.

I am courious what everyone else is doing for them. I too have had a few just melt away while the one next to it thrived. It's very frustrating but I guess its part of the game. I am feeding oyster feest for my feather dusters and think it also helps my zoa's too.

Looking forward to seeing what others are doing.
