Zoa/Paly discussion?

also.... I like the look of the live rock w/ purple up. Right now, I am more interested in small colonies, as accent pieces.
I am trying to learn the difference between the beginner to advanced corals

Softies are definitely a new guy coral. Easy to maintain and you can get beautiful color with not needing super lights.

As for growth we haven't came up with anything. Just takes time. And good water conditions/ water changes.

As far as fragging. You meet people when you go and buy stuff or here on there forums. Anywhere really
You'll have something for sale or they will and most people can fragg you something to get you started for pretty cheap. Five or ten dollar range. And you go from where. It's awesome
Not a single person I have met personally in this hobby I have not liked.
Everyone's so nice and generous.
I love to return the favor helping people get started or learn new things.

Where are you from BH? If I'm in the neighbourhood I could swing by and check out what you have. I could get you a few zoas to start you out.
Or swing by check out someone else's tank. Just talk fish hah

Or check at your local fish store for a local club.
For instance on our site here, we have a classifieds that is open to members once they hit 30 days in their membership and supposedly a number of posts. In the classifieds poeple advertise anything they may have for sale. Coral, fish and equipment. If you can find a club forum in your area, you can meet people and trade corals with them. Not trying to send you somewhere else, we would like you to hang around on RF. Theres no reason you cant join more than one forum.
If the coral is fed more, sometimes they grow faster. There are products specifically for feeding your coral. There are products for feeding filter feeding coral like the soft coral and leathers, and other products for SPS and others for zoas and palys.

Do you feed meaty foods to your fish. Some coral, like most all LPS (large polyp stony corals) will eat the same food. I feed my fish raw shrimp and scallops from the grocery store, mysis shrimp and frozen formula one. Chopped up in small pieces and soaked in vitamins. I also feed my LPS corals the same food. I also feed my coral frozen cyclopeze and coral frenzy and sps grow and a number of different liquid foods from kent marine and brightwell products.

LOL...I know you didnt. I'm just giving you a hard time!
I love the soft coral. I've come to the conclusion, I love all the coral!
It is a good place to start. They are an easier coral to keep. You dont have to worry so much about calcium and alkalinity, so you dont have to test for it all the time or dose for it. You can have a less expensive lighting on that type of coral. I have T5 units on my soft coral tanks. They are not cheep, but they are not as expensive as the initial cost and then the operation of a metal halide unit or the cost of an LED unit.

And you can have a beautiful tank with just soft coral.

So I coral rx. And found this.


I think the termit looking things are copopods I think the little and only worm is a bristle worm.
I didn't think I had any of them I made sure that I didn't but when I got my thing of cheato I think they may have came thru.
I'm going to Internet search to check.

Yeah, the zoas dont look good.
I dont know about anyone else, but I would dip in melafix and set them lower in the tank with a little bit of flow. They might be too close to the light.
I had some that were looking like that and turned my LED's down and they are now opened back up.

They were Copepods. The worm It was too small to tell if it was a bristle. But that was my guess.
I will try lower. I read somewhere last night to cut the good one off but they are slowly closing as the day goes on.
All my parameters are in check. Nitrates are maybe 5. Super clear.
Salinity was 1.023 I raised it with some salt water as a top off just now.

We'll see I suppose. I wish I could go all sps ish but then I'm afraid I'd run into more problems lol.
I hate testing the calcium and such cause its like a mini lab. Their not as easy as the drops and wait for the color. Haha

So I went down stairs to my tank today and decieded to turn on the lights early
I've done it before but today was a shocker.

I have those little vermitid snails.
Or sundial snails.

I pulled out with my finger nail probably 15.
They were everywhere. Any idea how to get rid of these little zoa killers?

Probably just what you did. There are some wrasses that may eat them. If you can take the rock out and dip it in coral Rx, it may kill them.

What I did was look for the little strings to come out of there shell (it gives away there position). Then I take a small jeweler screw driver and stick it down the hole in the shell and bust the shell apart as far down as I can or till I get the snail.

You sure they are sundial snails?
I've never seen 15 of them suddenly show up.
Do the ones you pulled out have that cone shaped operculum?

collonista snails I guess they were. I tried refrencing google pictures but nothing really came up that small ( as small as mine are )
TJL reassured me that their not a problem and a wrasse would like to munch on them.

Hoping this aren't what causing my zoas to close.
I thought I found the culprit but I guess these are not pests.
