I saw a picture the other day of a clam that had zoo's growing on the side of it's shell.

Any downside to this? Will the zoo's irritate the clam's mantle at all? I was contemplating sticking some on the side of mines shell.

The clam seems to be fine. I should correct myself there more like palys. Not sure if that makes a difference.
Give it a try. I know of a few people that have tryed it and some even put coral on them ( can't wait to see what that will look like). Best of luck.

Right now mine has a piece of Pocillopora on its shell right now from polyp drop, which in my understanding, is how it spreads. Its at the bottom so i'm not too worried about it. I'm going to let it grow and then frag it off.

I had a rock that has zoo's all over it right next to the clam for a couple days. I purposefully made it so the mantle is touching it, to see what would happen. No ill effects so far, I might glue some on in the next day or two.

Thanks everyone for the response(s)!

Wow, I'd sure be worried that the corals would sting the mantel.

I tried before using sps attached. Only some species will sting the mantle (eg. Stag) and the mantle will retract to stay away from the sting (digitata was ok). I gave up after a while because i'm worried that they might just cause some imbalance on the weight stressing the clams (not sure).

Love the idea to have zoas attached. :D

Just to share my pink sponge on my clams

I have a Derasa that I placed in a nice open "cove" on the sand bed when I got it. The first night it moved itself over to where it's mantel was up against our zoo-covered rock. I was worried about the zoos stinging it, so I moved the clam several inches away from that zoo rock THREE different times. After it scooted back over there yet again, I decided to give in -- obviously it had a strong opinion on where it preferred to be ! It's been nestled in against the zoos for about 6 months now, has at least doubled in size, and seems perfectly content. Hasn't moved an inch since I decided to let it have it's way.

Yeah for some reason I have 2 clams that keeps on moving next to my brick red enchino. It for some reason likes to rest its mantel on the enchino. Go figure.:rolleyes:
