    Check valve on return line?

AWESOME tank! That would make an incredible frag tank or a full out look-down system! I see now why you had flooding problems since it has no surface skim / overflow box. My new tank didn't have any sort of overflow boxes either. I think instead of using a check valve, you should look into...

360 gallon logistical nightmare and no spare time!

Alrighty, a somewhat productive day :D. Painted the interior of the canopy with Zinzer123 (was recommended over Kilz by a painter friend for moisture barrier use), and I tracked down a 150 gallon rubbermaid stock tank. I have a sump now! I'll probably buy one of the 55 gallon stock tanks after...

    Check valve on return line?

Can't you just drill a hole at or *slightly* below the water surface on your return pipe? That will break any siphon, and you'll only have the water in your overflow to worry about. I tried using check valves on cichlid tanks in the past, they started leaking after a couple of months and were...

360 gallon logistical nightmare and no spare time!

Not too much progress to report today, had a crapton of errands to take care of... I did manage to track down Fatboy123 and buy four of his excellent Lumenarc reflector clones, so my canopy is effectively done once I paint it and put these in. He does excellent work with these, but I believe...

    2009 3rd Anniversary Sale!

I dunno... Those Eastern Washingtonian hooligans seem pretty enthusiastic... And they travel in packs... Might have to have crowd control there to handle the ticket sales?

    36-40 watt U.V. Sterilizer

I also want to experiment with an Box O' Aiptasia type filter (a small acrylic tank with base rock and nothing else) seperate from both my sump and refugium with a large UV sterilizer on the drain pipe back to the sump / return pump. Might be interesting!

    36-40 watt U.V. Sterilizer

That's mostly how I've set mine up on the 100g with my mandarin. On my new system the refugium will be fed directly from a small pump after my skimmer and gravity drain back down after the sterilizer near the return pump. As I mentioned, the concern would be if he has lots of things that feed on...

    36-40 watt U.V. Sterilizer

Also, keep in mind that the UV sterilizer (especially one that size) will also kill *beneficial* microfauna like plankton, copepods, etc. Don't plan on having a mandarin goby alongside lots of other 'pod eating livestock unless your refugium is totally seperate from the main filtration loop / UV...

360 gallon logistical nightmare and no spare time!

Hah! "Hey driver guy, get your butt back here, I want to file a complaint! You broke all of my glass figurines into powder!"

360 gallon logistical nightmare and no spare time!

Sand! 320 lbs, this should give me at least a 2" sand bed on the 360g tank. It wasn't packaged very well (only a single garbage bag per box which wasn't even sealed, although the box itself was mummified with tape), but none of it spilled in the first box I opened so I guess I can't complain...

360 gallon logistical nightmare and no spare time!

Oh, and good things travel in pairs... My order of 320lbs of Marco Rocks Bahamas aragonite sand just showed up as well :) The USPS guy looked a bit... upset... Eight 40lb boxes of sand . I offered to help him unload them, but he just sort of glared at me. Oh well, I can't make everyone...

360 gallon logistical nightmare and no spare time!

Happy day! My new Koralia Magnum 8 pumps have arrived (THANK YOU Barrier Reef!). I had to test them out as soon as I got home, so I plopped one into my 100g reef tank and plugged it in. It was about 8" under the water surface, no other powerheads were running (just my 800gph sump return) and it...

    Lighting XM Bulbs

I just checked XM's authorized resaler list, Hellolights has a very good price on 250w and 400w XM20k bulbs! Looks like a september only sale though, and free shipping :( I probably won't be ready to buy them yet since I still need another ballast or two.

    Lighting XM Bulbs

I like my XM20k bulbs as well, but wanted to see what else was out there in case it would give better growth with the same color bulb :) What sort of ballast do you run yours on? I'm using Hamilton magnetic ballasts and they run great.

    Lighting XM Bulbs

I was using two 400w XM20k bulbs on my 100g tank and really liked them. I was looking at the big display tank and frag tank over at Barrier Reef and asked what they were using since it seemed almost the same color / brightness, they're using Reeflux 20k I believe? I was very surprised at how...

    Approve or Disapprove

The OP is already using 250w bulbs / ballasts from the looks of his post. I'm only using 400w because I already had a nice Hamilton dual-ballast, but will have to pick up another dual ballast or two individual ones for the larger tank. With the 20k bulbs I normally use I haven't had to run any...

Not particularly worried about heat :) I've currently got two 400w XM20k bulbs on my 100g tank and a 250w Ushio 10k bulb between them and I haven't needed a chiller in the last two years. The canopy I built for the big tank is 14" tall (bulbs will be 12" above the top of tank, and about 13"...

The watts per gallon measurement is pretty useless anymore, but you'll probably be OK with 3 halides at 2' depth as long as those reflectors can handle a 3' x 3' or 3' x 2' area. I don't know the specs on your reflectors, but the 19" large size Lumenarc reflectors cover a 3' x 3' area, while the...

    DIY neodymium cleaning magnet

Bah, just got the shipment tracking info from UPS, it looks like the originally stated 9/25 delivery date was a bit optimistic on the part of the magnet vendor. UPS has it scheduled to arrive 9/28. Good thing I'll be otherwise occupied with my new system build this weekend
