Has anyone used a stock tank for sump/refug?

I need to set up a sump/refug for my 180gal reef tank. I am thinking about using a Rubber Maid type of stock tank for it. Has anyone had any experience using a stock tank? Any pros or cons? I appreciate input. Thanks,

Sump return and Closed loop! HELP!

Dan, I working through the same thing, but with a 180 gal. Your Iwaki will pump 420 gph, if I looked it up correctly. Are you planning on a reef tank or FOWLR? For a reef tank it is recommended to have water movement of 20-30 time water volume. So you need 600-900 gph water movement. For...

Water Flow for 180gal - need your suggestions!!

Deb, You want between 20-30X tank volume in water flow. A 55gal tank needs pumps/powerhead to move approx. 1200-1600 gph. You can do that easy with power heads and a wave maker of some type. You are not moving so much water that it will slosh. You are wanting a random swirl movement. Your...

Water Flow for 180gal - need your suggestions!!

Thanks - 1. The tank is not reef ready - so I am drilling holes for bulk heads in the non-visible side? I can not drill the bottom because it is probably tempered. 2. I am using a 55 gal tank for a sump with a different pump feeding the skimmer, reactors and frag tank. The main sump pump...

Water Flow for 180gal - need your suggestions!!

I want to get suggestions on water flow for a standard 180gal AGA. I will have 1800gph from the sump and 1800gph from a closed loop. The tank is visable from three sides (both long and one short end). I don't want anything obstructing the vision on the three sides, ie: on the glass. So...

Ballast Recommendation for 400w SE MH

Throwing out a question to get responses from people with experence on this matter. The different MH ballast are confusing to me. I want to run 3-400watt MH on my 180 gal reef tank. Which ballast is the best to use? Electronic, Standard Magnetic or HQI? How about brand? Thanks

    DIY Stand Remodel

Thanks for the input. I know that you always use a foam under an acrylic tank, but have noticed people using it under glass as well. I think it is a good idea since it will level everything out. Walmart is a great idea. Scooterman - I would GFCI everything that can touch water or even...

    DIY Stand Remodel

Very nice. Is your tank glass? Are you going to set it on a sheet of foam? I am in the process of building a stand and canopy for a 180 and 135. Trying to decide just what to do. Thanks.

    DIY Stand Remodel

How big of a tank are you putting on the stand. I am building a new cabinet for a 135 and was thinking of using 1x4 and 1x6 rather than 2x4's. I've looked at the stands at the LFS and they are all made with the 1X's.

What is your alkalinity and calcium levels?

Sherman - I agree, but I know a couple of guys around here that run their calcium that high and have no problems. I have a good friend that has had his at 600 without calcium saturation. My dKH was up to 12-12.5 and I am lowering it now. Yesterday it was down to 11.5. Why do you keep yours...

What is your alkalinity and calcium levels?

Have you tried Reef Crystals (RC) by Instant Ocean? I bought RC and like it real well. Keeps Mg and Iodine at nearly perfect levels for my reef tank. My reactor keeps calcium and alk in good shape. However, I have to watch the alk because it want to creep up. I'm guessing there is a good...

What is your alkalinity and calcium levels?

If you have a reef tank, I am interested in where you keep your alkalinity and calcium levels. I just set up a new calcium reactor and trying to get it adjusted to the level I need for a 90 gal. You input is appreciated. Thanks.

    phosphate's will not go down

Make sure you are using RO/DI water. If you are using tap water, check it for phos. That may be your source. RO/DI water is very important for water changes and top offs. If you don't have one, invest in one or find a source to get it. At the least, RO water. Also, do you have a good...
