Ok my sump is a little off the norm. Please help me with flow choice.

Let us know how it works, I'm curious about scubbers. Probably best to have both, the chaeto for a backup while the scrubber is cleaned.

Ok my sump is a little off the norm. Please help me with flow choice.

I might add a small one on the refugium Maybe just 14 long by 4 inches. But if you already have chaeto algae in the refuge would it be any better at reducing nitrate?

Ideas on how to plumb a remote refugium

Closed loop? To the remote refugium? The problem is I have to go up 2 feet in the ceiling then 30 feet then back down to a tank. It won't be closed loop. I wondering how I will get the siphon going. Its going to break siphon every week when the tank gets a water change.

Ideas on how to plumb a remote refugium

I can get about a 4 foot diferential. The tank is 6 feet at top of water, If I put the remote Refugium on the floor and have its level at 20 inches or less I'll have 4 feet of drop. Which will be enough to move the water up. I suppose I could put a really weak pump in the main just at the...

Ideas on how to plumb a remote refugium

If I use gravity feed I'll be loosing my siphon all the time when doing maintenance. I'm picturing a 1/5" pipe sitting in the water maybe 1 inch then going up 2/5 feet and making a 90 degree turn then going 30 feet, another 90 deg turn down to the ref. How will I get the siphon going? Should...

Off the topic, but what type of store (local not net) sells egg crate? I went to a couple of hardware stores and asked for it. I get that blank deer in the headlights stare. "Egg what? " is the reply.

Any solution to possible Copper problem

LOL, no just trying to help someone that is going through tough times. Unless you have had a display tank destroyed by copper you would not understand the feeling. Cuprasorb does work. Their may be other products that work too. Some people say once coppered it is dead for life. Thats what...

Opinion: Do you like your tank long or wide?

I did not mean to say a tank with more depth does not have its merits. I took it from the perspective of the novice person walking into a room and seeing your tank. They don't know or care about how easy it is to clean because of the dimensions they only see what they see. Example make a...

    Flow 101

Thanks, I had seen that one. It goes over power heads but thats about it. Have not seen one that goes over Overflow vs closed loop etc. Ie. One could get 10,000 gph just by blowing water around with powerheads but zero of it is actually filtered through a overflow.

    Flow 101

I was just wondering what peoples thoughts are on flow in an aquarium. Many times people list 10x turn over rate as the goal but fail to explain what type of flow. If using bio filters what is min/max flow through bio balls or live rock bio filter? 1. Overflow flow 2. Closed loop flow 3...

    Sump /fuge Input welcome

On the running dry note. In my sump I have my return pump use a 90 deg PVC angled so one edge hits the bottom and the other us above the bottom by maybe 1/2 inch. I have a check valve on the return as well. I've run the sump dry for days and no pump failures. They never will suck 100...

Opinion: Do you like your tank long or wide?

If you have the space you always get more of a WOW effect from a longer thinner tank. People can't see the depth of the tank as easily as they can see the width. I've seen hospitals use a 6 inch think tank that was huge like a flat scree TV. When you enter it gave the impression of a 1000...

    Check valve on return line?

I have a check valve on my return line. I think its the flap type. Works well, My is hard plumbed with 1 inch PVC. Its been working for 3 years without issues. No floods!

    Plumbing Design - Please comment!

If you leave the long drop with the overflow it will perform better in terms of how many GPH it can handle. Noise? if you put a valve on the overflow you can get the water to back up in the pipe so its not falling as far. Could insulate the pipe of put a muffler on the opening. Why the T...

    plumbing issue

It has to be your return pump. Maybe a dirty impellar or just old. Yea I agree Mag pumps are weak. I have a new 9.5 Magdrive, its a piece of junk compared to my little giant pumps which cost almost the same. Its only saving grace is it can be run in the sump.

    stand for acrylic tank

you can use Styrofoam or black rubber door strips. It helps fill in any pressure points. You don't need to support the entire floor of the tank. The edges and some cross beams. Using sheet plywood with styrofoam will ensure even pressure across the floor of the tank. If the plastic is...

Need help with 300gallon build. new to this

Its probably closer to 290 gallons when you take the wall thickness into account. My tank is 340 gallons by dimension but I have 1.25 inch walls (its 44" tall) So my actual volume is like 300.
