    Feeding corals

So it looks like phytoplankton isn't necessary. There are lots of zooplankton products available on the market. Are they worth the $ or should the coral get enough nutrition from left over fish feed and fish poop?

    Feeding corals

Making your own "mush" makes sense, nutritionally. But I have to tell you... I'm already pushing it with my wife where it comes to this hobby. I can't begin to guess her response to my blending up raw seafood in our kitchen. (Who remembers the "Bass-o-Matic?) So what about the prepared...

I hate testing my tank! Please Help

What kind of lab do you go to for this. I'd like to try to find one locally.

I hate testing my tank! Please Help

I hope this thread isn't dead yet... I've had awful experiences with three different home test kits. Instant Ocean and Seachem both led me to bad places. So I threw them away and bought some Salifert kits. A lot of people on this thread and others like them a lot. And they also put me in...

UV Sterilizers and Reef Tanks, Yeah or Nay?

Actually I have one from an old system. A Turboflow. It needs a new bulb and a new powerhead for water flow. I rather not spend the money. But I do have a cyno problem. So I was wondering if that wasn't one of the answers. Think I'll just think on it for awhile. Pete

UV Sterilizers and Reef Tanks, Yeah or Nay?

I already have more electrical chords snaking around the aquarium stand than I ever thought I'd need. But there isn't one I'd go without. So I'm reluctant to add any more. But... what about a UV Sterilizer? I've heard the benefits, kills parasites, helps in algae control. And I've heard...

    Feeding corals

So I'm still trying to get this straight. Is the concensious that most corals don't need to be fed? That they'll do fine with good light, good water movement, and good fish poop? Sounds too good to be true!

    mark weiss reef vital dna?

I've found that most of those products are REALLY BIG sources of Ca and they will tip the balance in your tank. Vital ain't vital.

    Feeding corals

I'm just starting my collection (had gone "fish only" for three years) so it isn't much. I have a decent sized open brain coral, some frog spawn, some button polyps, a few small mushrooms and I'm trying to resurect a nearly gone bubble coral. And a friend just gave me a small shel with some...

    Feeding while Skimming

Well that worked! In a small glass I mixed tank water, two frozen cubes, thawed and mashed, some freeze-dried cyclopeeze and some of the liquid filter feeder/vitamin stuff. Then I added it, just a bit at a time, over the course of about 15 minutes. Every one ate. The skimmer behaved...

    Feeding corals

I got some great advise in one of the other forums on this site in regards to feeding my fish. In getting this someone also suggested that I was probably wasting my money and poluting my water feeding a pre-packaged liquid phyto product to the corals. He suggested that fish waste was probably...

I'm just starting my collection so it isn't much. I have a decent sized open brain coral, some frog spawn, some button polyps, a few small mushrooms and I'm trying to resurect a nearly gone bubble coral. And a friend just gave me a small shel with some zenia on it that I'd like to propogate...

    Feeding while Skimming

Now there's a thought. I do typicall just dump and go. You're suggesting I should slow down the input, a little now, a little more, a little more...? But what about the corals? I feed a liquid phyto w/vitamins. I'm following instructions. And, just as it says it would, it clouds the tank...

    Feeding while Skimming

Does anyone else turn off their skimmer while feeding? I feed daily, chopped frozen for the fish, liquid phyto with vitamins for the coral. My skimmer is the first pump in the sump. If I don't turn it off and keep it off for 2 hours after feeding, it foams right up and fills up the cup...

    lowering alkilinty

Don, you make a lot of sense in a hobby that's sometimes hard to understand. Thanks for your help.

    lowering alkilinty

I also have this problem. Salifert test kits show Ca at 360, KH at 11.8/4.25. So calcium is low and alkilinity is high. I have also found magnesium to be low (1125 ppm) and am working on bringing it up. BTW... I did a 20 gal water change on the 125 gal tank the day before I tested. But how...

    A few Refugium questions

Yes, I'm running a Euro-Reef skimmer that's rated for 180 gallons and my tank is a 125. I really appreciate the help guys. You can count on hearing from me again. I'll go out tomorrow and pick up a small powerhead and I'll clean out the sump. We'll see how it goes from there.

    A few Refugium questions

The tank's been up for three years now. I replaced a wet/dry with the refugium last month. The algae is not in the tank, only in the refugium section of the sump. Wouldn't there be problems with a small powerhead sucking up the cheato and clogging up? And thanks for the welcome. This...

    A few Refugium questions

I just set up my first refugium. I'm using a sand bed with some frags of lr. Currently I have some culerpa floating in it but I just ordered some cheato to replace it. There is a great deal of red, film-like algae in the compartment. It's trapped there. The sponge filtering the water flow...
