    need help id this hitchiker(?)

My peppermint shrimp are farming them: they eat about one tentacle a day off the really big ones. That gives them just about time to regrow before they start around again.

    RO/DI auto topoff question

I use an inexpensive unit from autotopoff.com (dual switch) and a 900 maxijet to deliver ro/di to the sump from an old salt bucket, and I fill the topoff bucket about once a week from a portable ro/di I set up on my washing machine. I buffer the topoff to a level that maintains my tank alk, so...

Need some advice with my tank

I would not add fish or inverts until I had those parameters better balanced. Salt should be 1.024, alk 8.3 to 11, calcium 400, ammonia 0, nitrate 0, nitrite 0.

I think i might be the dumbest reefer in the world

Keep a log with date, test readings, things added, including corals, fish, and additives, plus events like: scraped back walls. Mine reads: Alkalinity: Salinity: Calcium: Magnesium: Temperature:

    all types of caulerpa bad?

I'd much prefer feather to grape, for sure! Feather's kind of pretty. But I'm not letting anything into my display tank that can put down roots.

    halimeda carries bacterium infecting coral?

I'll be interested to see any details. I don't have any halimeda in my system, but...

    halimeda carries bacterium infecting coral?

Halimeda is that very stiff stuff that looks like Christmas Cactus, little plates joined by connection-joints.

    O.K Here it is...Atlantis!

I want to go there. I've wanted to go there since I first saw it. What a treat!

    halimeda carries bacterium infecting coral?

Just saw a warning in another forum from Ecology Letters Oct. 2004 that says halimeda macroalgae carries a bacterium aurontimonas coralicida, which causes disease in corals. http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk/pfk/pages/item.php?news=449 was the link given.

    bristle worms

Until I get a brush to scrub the insides of the holey rock, I think I'll stick with worms. Besides, some research I have read suggests that without then to break down the fish poo into useable size particles, there would be no acroporas. I have a couple that exceed 6 inches, and uncounted little...

Silly me - Flood number two!

If you have a wrist watch alarm, set it. A kitchen timer. Bring it to where you are. A water alarm can be set on the floor near the tank: it will scream like a banshee if water reaches it. Been there, got the t-shirt.

    help I am new

When you add new fish, set their bags (open) in a bowl in the sink (with the stopper in!) and go get a couple of {glass, no metal} cups of water from your tank. Add this water to the bag at the rate of about a [plastic!} tablespoon or so ever so many minutes over an hour until the water is about...

    How many fish?

I have a 52 gallon, with corals. I used to have (pre-move) a 100 gallon with fish, some fair-sized, and a lot of chasing. When I set up this one, I went to a different model of reefing---I get only nano-fish. I have 2 firefish, a chromis, a mandarin, a yellow watchman goby, and a rainford goby...

    leathers and shrooms with sps

I've done it. This time around, though I started to---I realized I want my corals to grow fast, so I backed away from it. My only problem is some hitchhiker mushrooms---they're not as bad as leathers and zoos in that regard, so they stay: they're a good warning-system for water problems. Now...

    Brown Algae

I got mine from the lfs. It has the di unit horizontal, with a pressure gauge, and it has 3 vertical columns, a particulate and chemical and something I'm not sure of. It has blue and yellow tubing plus one screw-on tap with a push-in connection for the blue inflow, and a yellow waste line which...

    Brown Algae

Thunyh, I use a portable ro/di that can be hooked up to my apartment sink (via an adapter) or my washing machine cold water spigot---I made a Y connection to that, and it sits on the washing machine when used, which absorbs any leaks. This ro/di unit is because I live on the 3rd floor a good...

    Brown Algae

Steve-S, thank you for your clarifying post; I was making the (unwarranted) assumption that the brown algae isn't algae or diatoms, and that certainly deserves a check. Indeed if it is algae (and we've seen some samples of genuine brown algae lately) or if diatoms, that's a different fix. If it...

    Brown Algae

Best at this early stage to correct the problems and wait for it to die back. If it occurs later after the tank is well-populated, there are emergency fixes for it (Chemi-clean: file that one away for a later problem: it's a large, messy fix that you probably don't need unless you have corals in...
