max comfortable temp for soft corals

Got all the lights in 6 x 54watt T5's. With fans I have held 80 deg +/- 1 deg for the past three days. I can mount the ballasts outside the tank hood and get the temp down to probable 77 or 78. Is it worth the trouble to drop the temp 2 degrees or is 80 ok ?

    Play sand bottom

I'm in the process of removing all my course crushed coral bottom cover from my 65 gal tank. It has a lot of shell and I really don't like the look. I want to go for a sand bottom. Someone told me to go to Home Depot and but play sand. It's sterrile and cheap. It's kind of brownish in color for...

    temp controller for fans

I really appreciate it. I have done a lot of work with boat and car electrical system and feel really safe around 12v, but not AC - I leave that up to the pro's. That's why I'm trying to find a simple controller. All the fans I have are running 12v.

    temp controller for fans

You know I was just thinking that this thermostat has no probe - so how am I gonna control it with the water temp ? Hmm back to the drawing board. I found this link - http://www.rainbowkits.com/kits/FC-1p.html It seams to fit the bill. Any thoughts on this ???

    temp controller for fans

What does "low voltage" mean. Ac or Dc ? I picked one up at home depot to fool around with but the instruction really simple, just describe how to swap it out. There are three wires. When I replace to one in the house it had three wires also.

    temp controller for fans

I have installed a few 4 inch fans in my tank hood and sump. Now I need a way of controlling them other then my wife and I checking the temp and turning them on and off. I have had timers but the cycles are note static and the temp still varies +/-1.5 degrees. I'm thinking about a standard...

Just got some digital thermometers in the tank and the sump. Temps seem to be settled in at 78 with the lights on and 2 small fans.

    Cool idea?

I don't really have one in mind yet, just kicking around some ideas. I have seen small ones at the mart stores pretty cheap. I will probably pick one up for some testing.

I can keep 80 with 2 48 inch regular flourescent lights and 2 small fans. I can add more when I get the new lights installed.

    Cool idea?

All I need is a small drop in temp. I have used the cooler extensivly on the boat. It will drop the temp about 40 deg with a very low draw at 12v. For the tank I just need a small drop about 5-10 degrees. I have not looked at the smaller units, but the plan is either direct plumb it in line as a...

    light height.

Got fans. Can add more. I will have to plum the tank straight to the city water supply (or I could run a pipe the 5 miles to the ocean) to deal with all the evaporation.

How long to leave the lights on

I'm in the process of testing temp through the day and then I will install 6 48 inch 54 watt T5 bulbs. Just trying to get things all planned out. I have had the tank up for ten years but never succeeded with anything more than fish. Many upgrades to the system (the lights being the last) will...

max comfortable temp for soft corals

Thanks for the quick info. I'm in the process of testing temp variances throughout the day, before I order my lights. I seem to be able to keep things around to 80 degree mark +/- 2 degrees.

    Cool idea?

Has anyone done any work with one of those 12v thermo electric coolers. I have one on the boat and it keeps things really cool for hours running at 12v and it has a power adaptor. I was thinking along the lines of plumbing a small one in line ? Any thoughts ?

    light height.

I'm adding a 48" 6 x 54 watt T5 retro fit fixture to my 65 gal tank and need some recommendations on how high above the tank to mount the lights. I would like them at high as possiable to keep the heat down, but don't want to sacrifice much intensity.

How long to leave the lights on

I currently just have fish in the tank, but will be adding some soft corals in the near future. How long should the lights be on to let everthing grow.

    power sweep heads

I have installed 2 power sweep 228 heads in my reef tank. They worked fine for about the 1st hour then stopped sweeping. I have pulled them apart to clean and inspect with everything ok. They will work on and off, mostly off. They have good flow. Has anyone had any experience with these power...

    t5 or PC lighting

I was told by my local fish shop that the t5 fixtures are being discontinued. Does anyone have any info on this ? I'm afraid of getting into something with no future. I also have ruled out MH due to heat. I don't have a chiller. I'm looking at putting just softies in my tank (65 gal 48 x 15 x 21...
