    29 gal project

Looks great! Was your LR fully cured, and if so, how long did it take for the ammonia and nitrites to get to zero? (there is always some die off in shipping) I recently set mine up and bought cured rock and was amazed at how quickly the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate levels changed. I had planned on...

    Submersible (?) heater

For what it's worth, a rep from Eheim responded to my email about the confusion regarding whether or not my heater was submersible. I'm glad they responded, and I thought their reply might help to eliminate some of the confusion. I copy the reply (and my initial question) below...rather...

    I'm diving in (finally!)

Thanks for your comments Andy! Aenomones have always fascinated me for multiple reasons. I do hope one day to be able to keep one in the tank, but I will be sure to read up and not introduce one that could jeopardize exisitng inhabitants. Sessile just doesn't describe them accurately given...

    I'm diving in (finally!)

Ack! I rememebr reading about rubber containers possibly giving off Phosphate, but completely spaced it when I went and purchased the trash can. It's a rubbermaid roughneck. I'll be sure to test the phosphate. Thanks for the reminder.

    I'm diving in (finally!)

Nikki, I had planned on initially keeping some hardy fish until the tank stabilizes, and then slowly introducing soft/mushroom corals. Right now we're toying with the idea of keeping either a Caribbean or Pacific Reef system, but some of the fish we want (and corals) might muddle that up and...

    Herbivore package

Oh yeah...the Strombus snails seem like a great addition as well! I'll get some of those too.

    Herbivore package

Thanks to everyone for the sound advice! Many of your comments have mirrored some of my thoughts, and others have made me reconsider! I always felt like the number of specimens offered in the typical reef package were a bit high. The more I read, the more I think i'll avoid the package and...

    Herbivore package

Thanks for the reply! I did forget to mention i have a 1" sand bed, so as you might suspect, I'd like a sand sifter in the mix. I'm still not exactly sure what we'll put in the tank yet, but I really want to be safe and take it slow...after the cleaner package, we'll get a few hardy fish (for...

    Herbivore package

After the tank cycles I'll soon be ready to add some herbivores to start getting a handle on some of the algae that's already started growing. I've read a lot about different types of snails, crabs, shrimp, cucumbers, nudibranchs etc. I have some questions for all of you..I would appreciate...

    I'm diving in (finally!)

Thanks for the advice! I am in 100% agreement with you. This morning, I was looking at the QT thinking "no way man..too small." I'll definitely get a larger tank

best hang on back skimmer bak pak?

I also have the Remora pro for my tank along with the preskimmer box. I am using the mag3 pump and have been very pleased so far. Of course, it's only been running for a week, but none the less I love the skimmer. It's quiet and efficient, and so far very easy to use.

    Submersible (?) heater

I did some internet research on decent heaters, and decided to go for the simple to use Ebo-Jager 100W heaters for my tank. On the Eheim website, the heater I have (and I quote) is "fully submersible". Well, when the heater came in, I plopped it in the tank, hid it as much as I could, and have...

    I'm diving in (finally!)

Greetings one and all, I'm rather new to these boards, but have been a long time lurker. It's odd, really..I feel like I know many of you so well since I've been reading the boards in preparation for my own tank. These forums have been instrumental in helping me to get my system components...

new tank, lights, and old substrate and base rock

Hello all! I'm new to these forums and would appreciate any and all advice! I'm setting up a reef tank (65 gallon Oceanic tank). I'm still a long way from introducing livestock, so in the meantime I'm reading everything I can and planning. I just received my MH/PC light hood (made by...
