    nice CHEAP small skimmer

I've been toying with the idea of modifying my v1 BM100, since I've replaced it on my tank with the BM160. Basically, I'd get a black rectangle of acrylic, about 14" by 6.5". Bend over two sides for legs, like on the MSX 160, and drill a hole in the top flat part off center to feed through the...

Don, Where did you get this Cone skimmer body? Do you have a link or a picture of it?

    Foggy acrilyc tank

If it is a film, you can try vinegar and a soft cloth. If they're scratches, then you're going to need to buff it with the acrylic buffing compounds. Buffing might be more trouble than it's worth for a small tank...

    nice CHEAP small skimmer

When you say 'reaction chamber', is that the main body of the skimmer or the pump volute chamber where the pin wheel lives? I have used the BM100 v1 precursor to this skimmer, I think it worked really good. The only thing I do not like is having the pump inside the skimmer chamber. When you...

    Bubble Magus Skimmers?

BM100 v1 pic from a while ago, right after I put it in the sump (also for a 40breeder): http://kaskiles.org/phpgraphy/index.php?display=aquarium%2Fequipment%2FBM100-01.jpg I'm using the BM160 v2 now, seems like a little more skimmer than I need. The extra wide neck makes it difficult to scrub...

    Limestone MUD??

Wouldn't a very fine particle size limestone powder have a tendency to solidify and form a hard cake in high pH/alk salt water. Just like normal fine sand beds harden, but enhanced due to reduced particle size.

PFO Done ? And All LED Aquarium Co.

So they get 5.65 million in free US taxpayer money: http://www.jsonline.com/business/35315959.html and they spend it on frivolous legal fees and suppressing other small US businesses? Sounds like the government needs to exercise a similar management control on these US taxpayer funded research...

    Questions about iron.

I think that when the aquarium does not contain enough iron (whatever that amount is), adding it can help anything that photosynthesizes grow. But some of the photosynthesizers in your tank might be better growers under all of your other specific conditions; so it could possibly kick start your...

Every worry about temp when acclimating?

I did a drip on a cold day, and noticed a pretty big temperature difference. Since then I've started dripping into the bag while floating in the sump.

    Sand or Bare bottom

The sand is also a home to bacteria, plankton, pods, etc.; so if you go bare bottom, you may need to plan on another way to get this porous surface area. More live rock, live rock/rubble in sump, etc.

A new highly efficient, super bright mini-light bulb.

Is it the same as this one? http://www.lifi.com/pdfs/PressReleaseLIFI-STA-40-10Nov08.pdf http://www.lifi.com/dynamic/display.php/63 Hmm, there is a 8000 Kelvin under the projector category: http://www.lifi.com/dynamic/display.php/53

    das Ex1 vs. BubbleMagus BM160

Ok, here it is running in the sump now: I may pull the entire skimmer out in 2 or 4 weeks to check the air injector for salt creep and the impeller for build up. I'll try to take more break-down pictures then.

    das Ex1 vs. BubbleMagus BM160

Wow, I really like this skimmer. The o-rings on the adjustment slit pipe make it way easier to fine tune.

    das Ex1 vs. BubbleMagus BM160

Ok, I've got the new BM 160. Just turned it up tonight in a 20g H sump. Hoping for the best on it. I just ran it overnight with warm water and vinegar, and rinsed it some. I think it's going to need a day or two to break in. The neck on this one is larger than the BM100, inside diameter...

    reverse flow sand bed filter

You could use nylon mesh fabric, if the window screen isn't small enough. That is what the magnavore simplicity media reactor uses, glued over a larger plastic mesh. Only things I can think of to use a sand bed for are; dentrification, particulate removal, root substrate or critter home...

    reverse flow sand bed filter

You could try something like this sintered ceramic shapes instead of sand: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=4169 At least that way you would not have to screen it off. But it will probably convert ammonia through to nitrate too quickly if you pump directly through...

Marine waste harmful to septic systems?

I've been dumping 5 gallons of salt water per week into our 3 bedroom septic system, and we haven't had any issues. I wouldn't hesitate to dump up to 50 gallons per week... Most water softeners use salt to regenerate, and end up dumping salt water also. I don't think water softener waste is...

Ok, I'll have to wait for them to come in stock then. Do you have any feel for the neck diameter difference? Thanks!

    das Ex1 vs. BubbleMagus BM160

Hi, I'm looking for an external skimmer to run 100% of my overflow into from a 40 gallon aquarium feed by an Eheim 1250. If the flow is too high for the skimmer, I'm just going to choke my Eheim back with a valve, if it is too low then I'm stuck. Anyway, I think I'll be ok on flow. Pumps: I...
