    cold live rock

Yeah, it packed pretty good in the buckets. Medium sized intermixed with small pieces. I just checked on it again (my wife thinks I am crazy sitting in our unheated basement watching and sniffing rock) and I saw a large worm crusing around. I will test the water tonight and see how it is.

    cold live rock

thanks, I will do that. Plus I am a pretty good rock sniffer so I will keep on sniffing. Anyone have any idea roughly how many pounds fill a 5 gallon bucket? I got 2 x 5 gallon buckets overfilled with rock for $100. I think I got a good deal. It felt like close to 100 lbs carrying it.

    cold live rock

The rock is up to temperature this morning and looks great, all sorts of life, I see brittle stars, worms, tiger pods (HUGE) and stuff. I am the impatient type, do you think there is any risk in putting some of this rock in my tank straight away? WHo wants to wait a month!! Travis

    cold live rock

I got a good deal on some live rock, it was always under lights and until 36 hours ago heated in plenty of water. But he sold his tank 36 hours ago or so and put it in a smaller tank without heat. It sat in his cold house for 36 hours when I got it. I now have it under water, heat and...

my 250 W MH does not seem bright

It is an internal ballast so it can not be the wrong one. I will get more info on the bulb, but it is only a couple months old and is 14000 K.

my 250 W MH does not seem bright

I compared my 250 W MH 14000K to my brother-in-law's 150 watt and his was brighter to look at and put off more heat than mine by far. I can look directly at the bulb on mine and not be blinded. Anyone have any idea why? Then my next question is wether or not I should put my 400 W MH with...

    can you breed emerald crabs?

I have been spending a lot of time watching my crabs, and so far they have no interest in the other critters, worms, etc. I saw a small bristle worm crawl right past a crab while he sat happily eating hair algea. If I do see any decline in life I will take them out. Plus I see the crabs as being...

    can you breed emerald crabs?

I went and bought what I am told is a female and male emerald crabs for my refugium. I checked out their adomen and they are both pointed which I typically take as male, but the LFS store lady assured me they were female and male, one has very large claws, the other very small. They appear to be...

    Deep Mud Bed Retention refugium

I am starting to plan out my upstairs tank which will be connected to my series of down stair tanks (all interconnected). I want to install a refugium half way down (high in the basement) to help biologically breakdown the upstairs tank's waste before dumping into my 25 gal main refugium. I am...

My New Baby Squamosa and Maxima Clams - YEAH

thanks! The frayed stalk as I called it fell off today and then I put him (max) on a flat rock. He opened up right away and seems very happy now. The Squomosa (mosa) is also on a rock. She appears to be happy too. That makes me happy :)

Wow, looks like a great light! But it is a factor of 10 too expensive for me :)

Backup plans for heating if I loose Power??

Yes, thanks everyone for their comments. I agree that with the investment I have even already, a generator is good insurance. But in the meantime, if my power were to go out before I can get one, do you think you could direct a propane torch directly on the surface of the water to heat it up?

My New Baby Squamosa and Maxima Clams - YEAH

I just noticed that the foot on the blue maxima looks weird. It is a white colored stalk with a frayed end. I was not able to get a picture but I will later. Should I be concerned? thanks,

Backup plans for heating if I loose Power??

All my tanks are housed in my unheated, un-insulated basement. Basically it is the same temperature as ambient, maybe a little warmer. There are many open vents all the way around the house to the outside. I have not had any issues with tank temperature, but I have 4 heaters in my 3 tanks...

My New Baby Squamosa and Maxima Clams - YEAH

Well, I am planning on having mine much closer to the light. Right now I have them within 12" of the light fixture, however I have them way over to the side so they are not getting anywhere near full intensity. I plan to creep them over and directly under the light over the next week period. I...

    Yellow Macro Algae

I have been noticing that the Cheato (sp?) in my refigium is yellowish, whereas the same cheato in my display tank under higher k lighting is dark green. Is this due to the temperature color of the light? My refigium has three 23 watt fluorescent flood lights, daylight color which is 6000 K I...

My New Baby Squamosa and Maxima Clams - YEAH

Well, here they are. My first clams ever. I am very excited. Any recommendations on how many inches they should be kept from my 250 W metal halide? With such a shallow tank I would put them within a few inches if I wanted to.

Bleach or Boil 150+ lb of LR?

Wow, I guess my inability to grow this alga is an indication that my water conditions are not optimal. I need to buy a calcium test kit as I am probably low. I got to say, I am willing to devote a lot of time to this hobby, but at this point I would find it hard to go through all the work you...

Bleach or Boil 150+ lb of LR?

I am surprised that Halimeda could become that intrusive. You are referring to the, calcium composition cactus type algae? I had tried to grow this in my past and am trying to grow it in my current aquarium with little success.

    Agronite LR

I have my rocks soaking for just over 1 month. I actually have not done that many water changes, the rain has helped. If it is small enough to fit in the tolliet tank then that is the way to go. Also, I have read that some people will go stick their rock in a safe spot in the ocean, lake or...
