    Budget Aquaculture

True, thanks for the input. You can buy silica sand cheap in the concrete area of the home improvement stores and I have heard that the composition doesn't matter for DSB.

    Budget Aquaculture

Haven't checked this thread for a few days; great responses, thanks guys! Budget is definitely a relative thing. I was just wondering about it after reading Anthony's book advocating DSB's in grow out tanks and knowing how much aragonite sand costs... I just thought, you know, ammonia...

    Refugium help

I would switch to chaeto myself, that's what I did actually. Except for a little caulerpa I haven't gotten out yet because I don't have 10 hours to spend with tweezers to get it off the rocks. Seeding the refugium is almost a must, I think. I went to a LFS where I noticed they had pods in a...

    space limitations

Agreed, use the sump for mechanicals especially if you are planning a display refugium anyway. That little space in the sump won't make a big enough fuge to be really effective and could cause issues with sand in the pump, etc. Cryptic areas (rock and no light) are interesting, but are better...

Here we go again...DSB...yes or no?

Also, MikeS your reef tank is sweet. I like the halimeda all over, one of the more interesting ones I've seen.

Here we go again...DSB...yes or no?

I really don't want to be a jerk, but you kind of just proved my point exactly. What you are doing will work for what you are trying to do, just not for the reasons you think. The RDSB might as well not be there IMHO. I have no interest in arguing as I'm burnt out on that already. MikeS knows...

Here we go again...DSB...yes or no?

dude, I have to note that from my reading what you are doing is carbon dosing and its success doesn't have anything to do with the dsb really. I am going all over recommending people not use deep sand beds unless they understand why they are doing it, not because it doesn't work but because of...

    Budget Aquaculture

I thought I would add to this thread my current plan. I realized that I could kill two birds and use the change water from my SPS system to change water in a hardy softie system since it would only be lacking in calcium and alk mostly and would be a great recycling method and work fine for a...

    Peoria Fish Stores

As a life long resident (captive) of Peoria, IL I have always been interested in how we don't have the resources it seems we should based on the population size. I chalk it up to bad leadership combined with apathetic/conservative/narrow minded population. Peoria has an awesome infrastructure...

    Budget Aquaculture

Thanks for the suggestions, that makes a lot of sense. Anybody have an idea of how much square footage a 250 watt halide pendant would cover over a 12" deep saltwater pond for medium and low light demanding softies? Thinking maybe 3' x 3' with the light 18" above the water?

    Budget Aquaculture

Hi Anthony, I am an aspiring coral farmer enjoying studying your book. I was wondering if you had any input regarding economic shortcuts in systems setup for aquaculture. I can not afford large amounts of aragonite sand and live rock, and I was wondering if there may be alternative serviceable...
