    6" PVC

Does anyone have (or know who might have) some scrap 6" PVC (preferably thin wall) they can sell? My rectangular skimmer was a bust (literally) and I don't want to repair it because it will probably bust open again in the future, thus the need for cheap 6" DIA PVC. I'd just buy a skimmer but I...

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

Thanks for your help Luke. I'll post more pictures of my setup when I get this beast going.

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

Called Aqua medic and found out I'm missing 2 washers that should have come with the pump. This is the second time I had stuff missing from an order w/Premium Aquatics so I think I'll have to find a new vendor. The washers are in the mail however, costing about $4 and not mentioning the...

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

No, the pump still takes 4-10 times taking it apart/reassembling to get it to start even when it's unhooked (yet still submerged so as not to damage it). I'll take a pic of the venturi tomorrow.

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

I take the whole pump out as the pipe isn't glued yet, so I'm pretty sure it isn't a head or venturi issue. I get the pump started then hook it into the skimmer. Good thing I didn't glue those pieces yet. Pic of venturi coming as soon as i get off my lazy butt. =P

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

So should I make sure the rotor chamber is filled with water before turning it on? The venturi attached to the intake. You can see it in the 2nd picture, follow the airline. (The venturi is made of several discs of clear acrylic.) I'll take closer pics of it and post them.

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

Here's the pics as requested. Yeah I'm running it stock with just the NW. I added pics of the internals in case I'm missing something.

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

I do, I just keep forgetting to upload and post them. I'll make a point of uploading the pics when I get home from work. There isn't a meshmod on it, just the needle wheel that came with the pump.

    DIY skimmer, OR3500 issues

My or3500 is a pain to get going. I have to open up the guts and remove/replace the spindle several times to get the motor to start up. I'm using it for my recirc skimmer. Do i need to let it run awhile to break it in? Any ideas?

    6" Dia Sch 40 Pvc

I've looked around for 6" DIA PVC, but the best I could find is a place that sells it in 20' lengths for $80. So if anyone is interested in going in on some with me please email me at erikjlee-AT-hotmail-DOT-com. OR better yet, if you have a 5' piece you're willing to part with, let me know.

    Reef Keeping Electronics

Cheap power supplies in these units are what usually fails. They are not made to handle the transients and harmonics associated with a power interruption (caused by inrush of other devices you and your neighbors have, not the controller). Using a good UPS should work in this situation.

    Electricity Costs

Prices will only get worse too. The cost of building new generation plants is way too high right now due to environmental restrictions that prevent any new coal, nuclear, or hydro plants from being built (for western utilities at least). For this reason, companies are being forced into upgrading...

Choosing an air pump for a DIY skimmer

I'm in the planning stage of building an airstone skimmer from 6" DIA PVC. I understand the maximum mixture of water to air is 13%, but I'm at a loss as to how I can calculate the air pump requirements and I don't want to overdo it if at all possible. The two air pumps I'm looking at are the...

I was just wondering if anyone had a 4'-5' section of 6" PVC they can sell to me. erikjlee at hotmail dot com

    Reef Tour

Nice work. It must be nice having a gaint aquarium to swim around in. :) Cebu huh? (Off topic.. My grandfather earned a silver star and purple heart there in WWII. My mother has the telegram to his family stating he was seriously injured there.)

    Please critique my sump/refugium

I have zero experience so far, let me just say that may be why I'm overthinking the situation. So I don't have a feel for what 100pgh or 700gph would actually look like, so right now they're just numbers to me. Better to overthink than underthink and have everything die on me. :) From all that...

    Please critique my sump/refugium

I put the return section in the middle to isolate the refugium from the skimmer section, as they require different flow rates. If I were to just run the tank overflow to the skimmer section, then have that drain into the refugium, then finally to the pump I would not have total flow control of...

    Repairing 55gal tank

Can you use a heat gun to heat the acrylic up and bend it? If so that would be a good way to make a new top/cross support. I'm definatley checking into DonW's idea though.

    Repairing 55gal tank

Has anyone ever replaced the top cross support on a 55gallon tank? The glass is 1/4" thick. I had to remove the entire plactic trim around the top because it was fractured in so many spots. I'm just looking for some ideas on what to use to replace it. Small alumanum L-brackets came to mind, but...

    Please critique my sump/refugium

Well I just picked up a 55g aquarium off of craigslist for only $30, so it looks like I'll once again be modifying this basic design (which seems to be a winner) around this tank. My poor stand will need an overhaul as well, since this tank is also 48" long and 13" deep. 2x4's are relatively...
