Has anyone ever replaced the top cross support on a 55gallon tank? The glass is 1/4" thick. I had to remove the entire plactic trim around the top because it was fractured in so many spots. I'm just looking for some ideas on what to use to replace it. Small alumanum L-brackets came to mind, but I'm not sure if it will leech into the water or not. Any ideas?

you might look at acrylic. I am replacing the black plastic cross member on my 46 g bowed front with clear acrylic. I went with 3/16". I do have all the plastic around the top intac.

Can you use a heat gun to heat the acrylic up and bend it? If so that would be a good way to make a new top/cross support. I'm definatley checking into DonW's idea though.
