    Hydor Flo?

I'm thinking about reducing the number of powerheads I'll put in my nano by using Hydor Flos, the question is, having never seen one in action, what is the flow pattern? I have a minibow 5 that will be bb and was planning on using 3 minijet 404s each plumbed with 2 outlets. Would I get full...

Creative thinkers, help me with my overflow!!

I have a minibow 5 I want to use an AGA 5.5 as a fuge. Problem is the height difference between the 2 is only about 2 inches. I had thought of using 2 3/4-inch overflows to feed the 300 to 500 gph of flow that will be the return. Problem is, with the trim pieces on the tanks, there is less...

mini jets and wave makers (and other questions)

I like the idea of not having it. I don't need the pods from it. I knida wanted it to help transport nutrients since I'm running skimmerless, but if it ain't gonna help, I just assume return it and buy a third mini jet...I need the wattage from it instead of a heater.

mini jets and wave makers (and other questions)

So I'm setting up a nano (or a pico, I don't recall where the cutoff is)...a 5 gallon minibow. Cool little tank. It'll be skimmerless because it's in my bedroom and I don't want to listen to the skimmer. I'll keep the bioload low and only stock hearty stuff so I won't miss the skimmer anyway...

    Giant pico

As mentioned in a post a few days ago, I'm getting back into a reef with limited space and limited funds. By keeping things small and in one tank I can reduce my equipment costs and beg borrow and steal frags and rock from friends to make my livestock costs almost nil. Obvioulsy there will be...

getting back into a reef, need some help

I'm going small for several reasons. First is space. Second, I found that as soon as I started adding sumps and such, the good quiet pumps got expensive, small submersible pumps that are also quiet are much less expensive. The cost of live rock in a large tank would go up big times since I'll...

getting back into a reef, need some help

It's been about year since I took my lumps and sold my 29 gal reef. I learned a lot by making a lot of mistakes. Well, now it's time to try it again. My thought has been to do a pico, 2 to 3 gallons but with a large sump, 5 to 10 gallons. But, with all the plumbing and buying the right pumps...

    Scary outlook for Coral Reefs

While this is certainly not good, I would caution against being too reactionary. In the 50's, the scientific community was panic stricken over global cooling! The way this amazing ecosytem we call earth works is truly incredible. Just when the scientific community thinks they've got it all...

    Detirius in BB tanks.

That and little gifts from the snails.

    Sand Recommendation

I'll try to post a pic tonight...it's really a very different look from the starboard. Half the reason I did it was to be different and not use the starboard. I think the results will speak for themselves. Having said that, I do like the starboard, I just prefer the black. Like everything...

    Sand Recommendation

For my bb, I put down a piece of black ABS plastic. I find the white to be too bright until the corralines grow on it. With my black background, having the black bottom, gives a really depth to the tank. My original intent was to have the bottom slope forward. The back is about 1/2 inch...

    predator crab

If he's still alive, I was thinking of setting up a 1 gallon pico on my desk for a mantis but that thing would be way cooler...assuming I can find him an affordable food source other then corals.

    noisy sump

Been playing with the noisy sump and want to run a question by y'all. As part of my correcting my less then perpendicular mounting of the baffle for the chamber with the return pump in it, I discovered 3 things (some were obvious). First, with a huge chamber for the return pump I have no...

    Calcium test kits

To be technical about this, I'm color defecient. I have a salifert Ca test kit and I have trouble seeing the change from purple to blue. Is there a test kit that is easier to see? What about a Ca monitor? Are they affordable?

    noisy sump

The setup is still under development...there are no doors. Probably a part of the problem.

    noisy sump

Everything I've read on the Eheims make me think that they are the way to go...if you got the cash. Realistically, I need 2, the second for a planned closed loop.

    noisy sump

I finally got my sump up and running, that only took like 4 months. It looks good, mostly...there are a couple of issues. First, the baffle in front of the pump section isn't perfectly straight up and down so I get little vortices that work a little air into that chamber which go in the pump...

How many outlets from a Mag9.5 return?

the update... I think everything works. No leaks appeared...yet. Only 1 problem...my baffles didn't hold. So, I'll continue another day. The hard part is done, now I just need to use enough silcone and all will be great!

How many outlets from a Mag9.5 return?

I'm hoping that 2 of the outlets, because they'll be so restricted, will be fine with the 2 open ones. I'll leave off the 2 extras, this is why asked. I'll add those other two when I add the closed loop sometime in the next couple weeks. thanks

How many outlets from a Mag9.5 return?

So I'm running a Mag9.5 as my return pump, or I will before I go to bed tonight anyway and the original plan was to put 2 outlets aiming at the front glass to be deflected back at the rock and 2 more straight down into the corners through a constriction (aka a 1/4 or 3/8 hole drilled in a cap on...
