    Probiotics, What?

probiotics krish75 I employ the use of a skimmer very sparingly. there is a company that I am trying to check into that produces beneficial bacteria for oil spills, stagnet ponds, run off ponds, sewage treatment facilities & etc. I understand they have developed a bacteria for use in aquariums...

    Probiotics, What?

probiotics Plack, you are correct, a refugium is a promoter of life, that is indeed it's primary function, the function of a fuge is parallel to the salt marsh, it as a norm, fosters beneficial bacteria, making it a probiotic, I am not a ozone fan and neither is our upper atmosphere. you have a...

    Probiotics, What?

probiotics Nikki, the post in reply to you post was getting overly long and I would like to conclude it. when we envision die off of bacteria I think we see them as larger animals. millions of bacteria could fit in the eye of a needle, if a wholesale die off were to occur in a tank it would...

    Probiotics, What?

Plack, yes water changes will remove no3, however this is a stick your finger in the dike type of remedy, after several hours usually the no3 will be back in full force. if there is an ongoing or upsurge of no3 then quickly locating the problem is mandatory. most times no3 is the outcome of...

    Probiotics, What?

probiotics plack A water change would not be pro or anti as this would just be reducing the total of all bacteria present in the water ( beneficial as well as non beneficial) get dumped. protein skimming and ozone are indiscriminate, they both (as well as uva) waste bacteria (good,bad,ugly)...

    Probiotics, What?

probiotics nikki, thanks for your interest. Water quality terminolgy usually (but not always) refers to parameters. so the association of bacteria with water quality is not an indicator. I tried to not lean on the term good/bad algae and made an effort to discredit those distinctions. in an...

    Probiotics, What?

A few days ago on posting in a thread I used the term probiotics. and as usual I stuck my foot in my mouth, I was not aware that probiotics was such a vague subject and took it for granted that everyone knew and understood probiotics. when mojoreef asked me to remove my foot and elaborate on...

    dkh to high

dkh too high Well it is not getting any worse and your Ph is coming up.the ca reactor is off right? the air stone will help greatly as it will drive off the co2. I know that water exchanges are expensive and they are adviseable but if you can maintain the Ph and perhaps get it up to 8.3- 8.4...

    LR Falling Apart

maxx well I will try again. I am not sure you are trying to figure out anything, but here goes. go to google search, type in---probiotics in reef aquaria. most all the reef people are there, mark weiss is there .reed mariculture, eric bornman, sanjo, etc

    LR Falling Apart

rock falling apart NaH2O, when beneficial bacteria are compromised they can and are replaced the compromise workes both ways, if a pro-biotic approach is used it can and will compromise the existance of "bad" bacteria. it is not logical to assume that an outbreak of disease or other "problem"...

rock falling apart Maxx, I do not see abrasiveness on my part, nor do I mean to be abrasive, and your evalueation of my intellegence level is irrevelent as countless numbers of great reefers with low to average intellengence who have years of hands on experience have contributed greatly to this...

    dkh to high

MMKeeper, precip can also be subtle, the particals can be very fine. sometimes it can be seen by holding a glass of tank water up to the sunlight and a shining effect on the crystals can be seen. precip is the binding of minerals, they become heavy and fall out of solution, usually they are not...

    LR Falling Apart

NaH2O, it appears you are not comprehending the posts, are you saying that if you have a disease or other "bad" condition in your tank you would not add anything that would compromise your good bacteria? how then would you correct the above problems? anyway, it was not suggested by anyone that...

    LR Falling Apart

rock falling apart It is logical to assume that the rock was damaged prior to you receiving it. this is not uncommon, usually crediable dealers will not sell this degraded rock. but your statement about the coral bones and shells dissolving indicates a possible serious problem in your tank...

    LR Falling Apart

dnjan, from what you are say it appears that your water column may be mineral deficent. it takes many months or close to years for shells and coral skeletons to dissolve. would it be possable for you to test all usual water parameters? do you dose iodide, strontium & molybdenum?

    dkh to high

The alk should be buffering your Ph, it appears that you are experiencing precipitation. ca over 440 will almost always precipitate. how is it that your dkh is at the high end?, have you been dosing carbonates? many reefers have quit using the ca reactors due to many problems, as I indicated...

    dkh to high

I wuld not want to see you adjust any parameters until you have shut down the ca reactor and then have waited about 10 days kalk will increase ca also as will b-ionic raising your dkh/alk slowly will drop the ca but as mentioned watch for precipitation. go with the water changes. are you sure...

    dkh to high

hi dkh Your Ph is too low, increase your alk to about 14-16, seltzer water only lowers alkalinity, (by adding carbon dioxide) your problem is the ca reactor. usually they require almost constant tweaking would be a good idea to shut it down for a while. 20% water exchanges are a good way to go...

    LR Falling Apart

rock crumbling Increase your alk to about 14 and your ph to 8.4 keep your ca at about 400-420. was the rock live when you acquired it? sometimes rock in it's homewaters will be exposed to the air, etc for a long period of time then become submerged again and take on new lifeforms. do not blow...
