    "Shark Attack"

One of my most memorable diving experience was diving with about 2 dozen sharks in the Turks and Caicos...mostly gray reef and blacktips.... MikeS

    UV light question

Excellent...sounds like an interesting science project! Good luck with it, and do share the results with us:D And welcome to Reef Frontiers as well:D MikeS

    UV light question

Is your goal to make the corals flourece? If so, you don't need a UV light to do that...the high intensity blue LEDs will make corals flourece quite brilliantly, and most of these are in the 420-450 nm range I believe, and probably put out much less UV radiation than a 395 nm LED. Here is a...

Is there a single person who has had success in mixing different clowns?

In the past, I've had the best luck mixing clowns when there is only one individual of a particular species. I've kept a tomato, sebae, and true perc. together successfully in a 55 gal. in the past with very little agression or fighting. If there was two or more of a certian species, well...

    Red Sea Prizm Skimmer

Not a problem:D New skimmers usually have some gunk on them from the manufacturing process, and it can take awhile to wear off and start producing good skimmate. During this time, it can be hard to keep them adjusted, and some bubbles in the tank usually occurs...I wouldn't worry too much about...

    Red Sea Prizm Skimmer

it can take a few days for a new skimmer to "break in", and during this time, some bubbles in the tank are not uncommon. I'd give it a few days and see what happens... MikeS

    UV light question

UV radiation has been shown to act as a photoinhibitor in coral zoanthelle...here's an article on it... http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/aug2004/feature.htm MikeS

    Mag 5 pump

could be a buildup of calcium carbonate on the inside, all my powerheads get that from time to time and it makes them buzz and rattle...you should probably open it up and see...

    High calcium, low alkalinity

when an imbalance between Ca and Alk exists, often adding the lacking component will be to no avail. Best thing to do is to do a few water changes with water that is in balance between Ca and Alk, and then add Ca and Alk accordingly to keep it balanced. Here's some reading...

    Lava ash

I can't remember the brand name of it, I'll ask around work and see if anybody remembers. Basically, it's just dishsoap that's also biodegradeable. Perhaps our resident chemist Boomer can think of something that would make a good foaming agent for aragocrete and be safe to use... The type of...

    Lava ash

I would tend to agree here, cured concrete is pretty resistant to corrosion, the majority of contaminates will likely stay in the aragocrete itself. My worries on aragocrete are time based more than anything. Salt water is a pretty hostile environment, it's pretty corrosive. Over time you may...

    Lava ash

hmmm...personally, I would avoid it, just to be on the safe side. Portland cement already contains several "iffy" things like fly ash and blast furnace slag. While the nasties in cement may be low enough or in a form that makes them reletively reef safe, I would see no need to up the potential...

    Lava ash

What would you be using it for? I know most people avoid using lava rocks because of possible silicates and metals.... MikeS

    Calurpa

Even if he doesn't eat it you can still keep it under control. Now that you have the bulk of it removed, just make it a habit to pick any new growth out of the tank every 2 weeks or so. Keep your water quality good, that will help slow the growth. As long as you do this, you shouldn't have to...

    Calurpa

I had problems with it in the past. Rather than cook the rock...I just spent a day and removed each rock one by one and manually removed calupera. It's time consuming, but more or less effective. Be certain to get as many of the little shoots of it that go into the rock...leaving even a tinly...

Who are you? Here is me ;)

Yeah, it does, doesn't it? Yeah, it's me...I think they all look so different because I usually allow a lot of time to pass before I let somebody take a picture of me:lol: MikeS

nice photos....man that's a big sucker...I have a few in my reef, but they are only about the size of my fingernail.... MikeS
