Need more flow... tunze or vortech?

I used to have a couple Tunze on my old tank and yes they are more quieter than the two MP40ES I have on opposite sides of my 160XL (63in by 30in by 24in tall). I really enjoy the syncing, and the wide gentle flow. I run mine at 75% power on reef crest mode and in night mode in the evening...

Need some advice on a MP40W ES

I have two MP40ES on my 160gal 63in length on opposite ends and running reef crest mode anti-sync. Love them! Run at 75% of full power, tune them right and almost silent. Wide gentle but serious flow. You will want more than one. The 60 is quite a bit bigger seeing it in person sitting on...

    new to rf

Generally speaking it is quite a change to go from MH to LEDs but patience as always is the key. First the spectrum will be different but hopefully you and the SPS will get used to it. Skipping all the wonderful efficiencies gained that I found after the switch to LEDs, I would say a few...

any such a thing about over skimming?

shut up Dang! If any of us could have a gorgeous tank like yours we wouldn't be asking such questions! LOL... yeah I think you can overskim but I would think it would take a lot to really affect the SPS color... just my opinion. Like trido said, don't mess with success.

    Vortech killing fish

Yep... no way it is the MP40W. I have two and even at full power do not pull health fish. This is alarming though... please check your water params! Something is not right but it is not your powerheads.

    Black Potato bugs?

I can't get a decent picture of these buggers but after a bit of research I think they are Black Stomatella snails. As TJL mentioned, these are quite cool as in the light they are indeed a jet black with a pearl iridescent shine to them. Thanks everyone.

    Vortech issues

This might sound crazy but try to shake your dry side a little and remount. I was having noise issues after cleaning my wet side and was about to order replacement part but it suddenly stopped after looking for the serial number and reinstalling. Atbleast this worked with my MP40

    How loud is your aquarium???

A remote fish room sure helps! LEDs have two very quiet fans... Only really hear the MP40s but I run those at about 70% on reef crest mode. The varying speed of the power heads is audible but if I ran constant it would be barely audible. Got to get those tuned in though or they will make more...

    Black Potato bugs?

I know, I know, everyone wants pictures but I am sitting in a hotel room thinking about my tank and thought I should bring this topic up. Give me a few days to get photos, but picture this... I was looking at my tank and spotted what I thought were some black algae bubbles. When I poked at...

To have a closed loop or not

I am kinda siding with Scooter and Skimmy... But great points all around. My latest sump with very low flow is collecting quite a bit of sediment and my skimmer seems to be pulling a whole lotta crap out. I believe though there is an optimum flow to maximize skimmer and allow settling vs. Just...

Why is it hard to keep Mag levels 'high'?

Thanks Boomer... yes I plan to make a two Mag supplement with Epsom Salt and Magnesium Chloride, just purchased from BRS. My hope is I can raise the levels a couple hundred ppm to at least above 1300 and then just boost the waterchange volume with this supplement every month or so.

Why is it hard to keep Mag levels 'high'?

Ca = 420 Alk = 9dkH Mag = 1100 SG = 1.025 Temp 76 deg F This has been pretty consistent. My Alk tends to easily drop when I am not looking, I do waterchanges about once a month. Switched to Reef Crystals a few months ago from the standard IO in hopes that would boost the Mag as advertised but...
