    Phytoplankton Farm

Maybe it's my age but I don't understand your comment. You certainly aren't alone on the thread as there have been two posts since your last post yesterday, and, your post yesterday wasn't something that required a reply. If you are talking about your personal situation, how can be be expected...

    2.5 gallon dwarf seahorse tank

You are certainly probably the ONLY person to accomplish this then. If you check out the dwarf forum on seahorse.org you will find that while some had success getting them onto various frozen foods, long term is was a failure to keep them alive with only frozen. You must have a lot of live food...

    Phytoplankton Farm

Well, I've cut back on my nannochloropsis cultures from 150g to about 20g now as I've switch to using spirulina powder from Brine Shrimp Direct and putting it in the blender with some water and blending it for two minutes. The spirulina is MUCH more nutritious than nanno. I used to grow four...

Bored! So lets design a Skimmer!

After reading all these posts in this thread, my head is spinning. I'm glad my skimmers were already built before I read this or I don't know what I'd have come up with. I went for simplicity and effectiveness and didn't worry about size or looks. It's not a pretty or as large as the "Boomer"...

Poll: What's Does Your Clean-up Crew Consist Of??

I use serpent stars in my reef tanks and nothing in my seahorse tanks. I have NO snails or hermits or anything like that in any tanks.

    2.5 gallon dwarf seahorse tank

I think you would get more response to that question on your thread on the "org" were there are a lot of dwarf keepers. For me, I have only a little live rock in my 5g dwarf tank and no powerheads, just two open ended airlines to disturb the surface water for proper gas exchange. I have the few...

    2.5 gallon dwarf seahorse tank

While 80° can work for some people and some seahorses, dwarf and standard, there are many more that have perished in the attempts to do so. There is no way to say for sure that they will do OK in your tank as it depends on too many variables. The problem is that you have to keep the tank a lot...

    DIY Phytoplankton Culture Station

For me, perfection has no bearing on things. I only want to produce as fast as possible with the least amount of effort. I've never known what temperature is best, I just grow it at room temperature which varies from about 68° to 75°.

    DIY Phytoplankton Culture Station

I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish then as my interpretation of "colonizing and clumping" would make me shudder if it happened. I want the nanno cells to multiply, not to clump together which would make them larger particles, heavier, and more likely to settle out of solution. I use...

    DIY Phytoplankton Culture Station

Aerating the culture keeps the nanno in solution. As it is a non motil algae, it settles to the bottom and depending on how long it is there the lower layers can be smothered causing an eventual crash. The more intense the light, the faster it grows.

    DIY Phytoplankton Culture Station

If you dose the F/2 according to instructions, and harvest at the peak density then the F/2 should be basically used up at that point. It's interesting to note that the levels of protein and Huffa's (fatty acids) go lower if you continue the culture past that point. Nanno is not the preferred...

Anyone in the Seattle/Tacoma area that does sea horses?

You can do yourself a big favour and sign up on seahorse.org which is the most informative site on the internet for seahorse keeping. There are links at the bottom of MY THOUGHTS ON SEAHORSE KEEPING page which will give you all the basics you need to know to start the hobby.

Instant Ocean Synthetic Salts & Algae Outbreaks: My Conclusion

I've been using IO for almost 18 years now. I go through about 4 or 5 50g bags a month. I have in the past, has some hair algae problems but it would be only in maybe one, sometimes two systems out of ten systems on the go. Obviously then in my case it wasn't the salt that was the problem. In...

    56 Gallon Seahorse/Reef Tank

Whatever way you choose to go, good luck!!

    56 Gallon Seahorse/Reef Tank

Personally, I prefer membership at seahorse.org over ocean rider membership. You didn't mention if the mandarin was a captive bred one or not, and what it feeds on. Normally in a tank that size they don't live out a year unless they can be sustained on frozen foods.

    56 Gallon Seahorse/Reef Tank

Nice to see you starting slow. However, I'm curious as to how you are going to keep the mandarin alive long term. There is not enough rock to sustain any population of natural live food for it, and even if it was sufficient as in a much larger tank with a lot more rock, the seahorses when added...

    Phosphates in Frozen Food

Certainly no offence taken and I do see what you are saying. If I can think of a way to respond without upsetting anyone, I'll post in a new thread at some point.

    Phosphates in Frozen Food

Mojo, For the most part, most of my posts are regarding artemia and seahorses anymore. The reefing hobby has passed me by as I still do everything the same way as when I started, like bare bottom tanks and all tanks lit with normal output fluorescent lighting. It's hard to advise people when you...

    Phosphates in Frozen Food

mojoreef, I never tested for phosphates even when I first started. On top of all that would you be upset to know that the only water I use is aged tap water for all my salt water needs? It probably has phosphates in it as well. When I started, NO ONE here used anything other than tap water...

    Phosphates in Frozen Food

Phosphates are not only sourced from the preservatives added (when added that is), but are a part of pretty well any food you would put in your tank, even flake or freeze dried or pellets. Other than rinsing the frozen foods in tap water, I've not done anything else to try to prevent phosphate...
