Just wondering if there is anyone local that could be my mentor. My sister would like me to do a small sea horse tank...about 10 gallons. It would be really helpful if there was someone local I could stop by and chat with, learn first hand. And especially buy some locally raised captive bred ponies once I get set up and ready.

thx. been pouring over forums, soaking up all the knowledge I can on SH. I plan to get a tank up and running in about 2-3 months.

Depending on where you're located, I keep seahorses. Though a ten gallon is too small for any of the commonly kept captive bred species.

Ditto on a 10 gallon being too small. Should look at a larger tall tank. Seahorses prefer the taller types of tanks. That and pristine waters. Definately try and get captive breed versus wild caught. There is a place in the Portland Oregon area that specializes in Seahorses.

Im probably going to be setting her up a 30g or 40g hex tank w/established LR from an existing tank. Im estimating 3-4weeks if if/when she does commit to wanting this. Mind if we come over on a weekend or something, Id love to spend 30 min or so picking your brain...checking out your setup ect. Plus it want her to see what its all about before she fully commits. It would be good for her to understand what all will be involved. Ill be the care taker, and Im pretty confidant I have been in the hobby long enough to warrant a go with sea horses. But I still would like to see first hand a good setup and whatnot. Id honestly prefer picking up livestock from a local reefer vs. something mailed. Let me know, and Ill run it past my sister.

Thanks,
Paul

You can do yourself a big favour and sign up on seahorse.org which is the most informative site on the internet for seahorse keeping.
There are links at the bottom of MY THOUGHTS ON SEAHORSE KEEPING page which will give you all the basics you need to know to start the hobby.

Thanks everyone. Ill be sending a PM when she gets back from her trip, I ran it past her this morning before she left, she said Saturday afternoon was a good day to take a trip to Seattle.
