    Shrimp in tank?

I have also heard that shrimp do NOT need iodine added to the tanks for molting or any other reason. In fact, I've read that iodine can actually stress the shrimp causing it to molt needlessly. I don't know which is true but I don't dose anything I can't test for and find that the system is...

    bristle worms

First off, ignore what you were told about bristle worms being bad. I've had them in my tanks for over seventeen years now and not removed any deliberately although some have been sucked up when doing cleaning chores. I have many that appear to be well over 8 inches long. They feed off detritus...

Why is it hard to keep Mag levels 'high'?

For those of you using just epsom salts for the DIY additions, Randy revised the formulae for the magnesium part to include magnesium chloride hexahydrate, using 3 parts epsom to 5 parts mag chlor. An Improved Do-it-Yourself Two-Part Calcium and Alkalinity Supplement System by Randy...

    seahorse, could someone help

The link in my signature has links at the bottom of my page that provide you with the basics you need to know for seahorse keeping. Basically, for BEST chances of success, a species only tank that has temperature controlled to the lower 70's with excellent tank husbandry. Seahorses number one...

Way too much humidity. Need advice.

I think each household has to assess it's own set of paramaters to decide how to handle things. Newer homes with better sealing and insulation need more heavy duty solutions. Also, the surface area of open water in the household, plus the temperature of that water, all can affect just how...

    chemicals

Save your money and don't use those, especially for a new tank. (Unless of course you just plain want to help the store make money) I agree, DON'T add anything you can't test for. For a normal tank there is NO need for Coral Vite, Iron, Strontium, or Iodine in any of it's forms. I have many...

    hyposalinity treatment in main tank

A UV steriliser, if appropriately sized and with proper flow, is still not going to kill all bacteria/pathogens, but only those going through the sterilizer itself. There are still a lot of pathogens adhering to surfaces within the system that NEVER go through and remain in the tank. Even...

    hyposalinity treatment in main tank

The only problem is see is that removing the pathogens by hypo is negated by replacing the corals and other contents afterwards. It IS possible but not guaranteed, that the treatment can give the fish time to rebuild their own systems to handle the re introduction of the pathogens afterwards.

Who feeds thier corals with rotifers?

I use live rotifers enriched for at least 8 hours with Dans Food with Beta Glucan, or with Algamac 3050. Rotifers have little nutrition without the enrichment so if using frozen, make sure that they have been bioencapsulated to enrich before being frozen.

Yay the new site looks good

When I logged on I got a page saying I'm not authorized to view. Thanks for the "new post" wording. Now, if I can only find a "mark forums read" on each page instead of having to go back to the start.

Substrate or not? Chime in please

I agree, it's a personal choice and I went bare bottom for all but one of my tanks. The prop tank has a sand bed.

    Water Temperature ....Please Help

Sorry Dan, but very little gas exchange takes place with bubbles, in a skimmer or in a tank. The bubbles have a surface tension that prevents that exchange from occurring. This topic was covered many years ago on Reef Central as well as another forum that I can't specifically remember right now...

    Water Temperature ....Please Help

BUT, it ALSO cuts down on gas exchange which IMO is necessary especially when the house is all closed up for winter heating or summer cooling. As for temporary insulation of the tank, don't for get to insulate the bottom, especially if it sits on cement. I had extra heaters hooked to a timer so...

    Brine Shrimp Eggs

And for another opinion, I would never place artemia cysts in any of my tanks, as they are KNOWN to harbour nasty bacteria like vibriosis. Also, as mentioned, some small fish or some fish with specialized digestive tracts have been known to ingest the hard cysts and have the tract blocked. While...

    Brine Shrimp

First of all, if people would do research on artemia (brine shrimp) they would find that the shrimp are not devoid of nutrition but only certain facets of nutrition, being the fatty acid profile. Protein levels of brine shrimp juveniles and adults grown from GSL cysts range from 50% to 62% which...

    Hawaiin Cleaner Wrasse

I've never seen a Hawaiian cleaner wrasse survive in hobbyist tanks. There was an extensive thread once on Reef Central and the consensus was that they should remain in the ocean as no one had been able to keep one alive for very long.

    Rebuilding a leaking tank

I rebuild all mine when leaks appear. I scrape down the whole tank extremely well with razor blades and then go over the "silicone" coverage areas again using multiple fresh blades so they are extremely sharp all the time. I then clean and scrub all silicone areas with white vinegar and the...

    Help with baby fish please

First of all, there are many successful ways to raise rots/brine/fry so it's best to check out all the ways and then decide which you might want to go with. Even at that, you can modify aspects of a method to suit what you have available. For instance, while I use the water bottles for culturing...

    Help with baby fish please

There are rotifer collectors you can use, but in my case, I bought mesh bags from Brine Shrimp Direct and made nets with them. I stop the air and let the crap settle in the containers and then remove the portion of rotifers/bbs I want to gut load, rinse and place in gut load container. After gut...
