Equipment question for new 55 gal reef system

Perhaps the only other thing that I would add to the sump is a phosphate reactor. They are cheap and can really help keep the algae down. Especially if you like to keep your fish nice and fat by lots and lots of feeding as I do. :)

    coral sting

I was sticking my hand down into the back of my tank last week, trying to rescue some poor coral that had undoubtably been the victim of an unruly hermit crab or perhaps a large snail, I started to notice a slight sting on my forearm. Since I believe that no man....errr coral...should be left...

Tanks look nice but you better watch out, I can see a big cat in the mirror in the first and second pictures. They may eat your fish. ;)

    The joys of Cyanobacteria

Just do a search on Cyanobacteria and you will get lots of other threads with people asking the exact same question. Or I'm sure you could just wait until NaH2O comes on and she'll bomb you with links on the stuff. ;)

    Pipefish?

Please do research before keeping any animals in the syngnathidae family. They require special care in forms of flow and food. Please also keep in mind that many pipefishes purchased by your LFS is probably going to be wild caught. These animals are ambush hunters and generally require live...

Salt Wars II. Attack of the Clowns

you could try changing the aquascaping. Perhaps that would trick the old pair into thinking they are in a new home.

    hair-algae-eating fish

I always use the nori for sushi from the grocery store...it's the same stuff as in the LFS and you get twice as much for half the price.

A word about Damsels.. (Caution! May be slightly graphic.)

Oh so the husband did it...uh huh sure...:eek2: you might as well blamed it on the butler with the candlestick. Well on a separate note my electric blue damsel is the nicest fish and gets along with everybody in my tank. So just thought I'd add my $.02

    How to start Hyposalinity?

This is true and if I do with a massive die off and not enough pods, I can always go buy some more. I'm sure the sacrifice is going to be worth it. Thanks for the help.

    How to start Hyposalinity?

Well they aren't really becoming an issue. I am just worried that one will snick at a worm and it will become lodged and the horse will die. I don't have anything else in the tank, just three horses. I don't want to sacrifice the pods, but, ya do what you have to i guess.

    How to start Hyposalinity?

and if Hypo isn't the way to go would Hyper be any better for the LR. I just am trying to avoid mass dieoff of the rock.

    How to start Hyposalinity?

I am trying to get rid of some of the larger bristleworms in my horse tank. If I took the rock and used this method I understand that the worms will most likely come out of the rock. But it will also kill the bacteria on the rock? Perhaps just placing the rock out of water for a short period...

    lime based rock

thanks for the info I hadn't planned on using it as my tanks are already up and running but this advice that was given didn't sound right so I wanted to verify.

    lime based rock

While reading on another site, I came across a post that stated that if one isn't going to use LR that lime based rock was the best type to use. Is this correct. Limerock is basically calcium carbonate. Would this cause the Ph to spike in a tank comprised mainly of Limerock. What if any...

Please help me save my reef ASAP!!!!

Ok now that all the problems are solved I have to defend my skimmer. I have a superskimmer on my horse tank and love it. It pulls out darker skimmate than I have ever seen. Almost nasty black. Perhaps I have one of the newer models but I love mine. Not saying anybody is wrong...I just had...
