    Filter sock question

Scooterman, Are you saying that filter socks should be changed regularly if you have SPS, or that they should be used infrequently? I know that by leaving them on, the detritus will continue to break down into phosphates/nitrogens. Thanks for the clarification.

Cleaning out a 100 gallon feed trough

What's the trough made of, plastic or metal? Plastics can leech chemicals into the water if they are not food grade, although if you only have water in it for a day or two, it shouldn't be a big deal. I would clean out the trough with elbow grease and chlorine bleach for a disinfectant. Rinse...

Will Beg for Weed - Reprise

Blazer88, Thanks a bunch. I will try to swing by around 2pm or so. If we don't meet up, just leave it with Eric, and I'll get it from him. Unfortunately I have family in town that weekend and my wife is having issues with me leaving her alone with them to swing up by the meeting.

Will Beg for Weed - Reprise

Since my last begging was unsuccessful, I figured I would try again. Does anyone have a clump of chaeto they would be willing to put in a bag and bring over to the PSAS meeting on Saturday for me? Thanks. oops. misposted in wrong forum. Sorry.

    clam lost foot

No change in lighting. Flow was decreased as I turned off a powerhead that was causing my temp to get too high. The clams are going to be moved into my new tank in a couple of weeks, so I'm actually glad I don't have to worry about getting it's foot off the rock.

    clam lost foot

I have a crocea that has been happy for the past 5 months I have owned him. He liked the spot he was in and had put his foot down attaching to the rock he was on. However in the past week he had begun to turn, simply rotating on his spot on the rock. Last night he was tipped over off the rock...

    Skimmer Setup

I remember seeing this post, but can't seem to find it again. Do you have a link? I am thinking of adding one or two additional baffles to my sump.

    Skimmer Setup

The only reason you would ever need a stand is if the water level in your sump is higher than the ouput of the skimmer. If your water level is higher than that you will get wetter skimmate, which may not be a bad thing. And your water level only needs to be deep enough for the intake of your...

    Birth of Dwarf Seahorses

mmmm. breaded angelfish. I'll bet those were tasty. :D Just saw the thread Vicki, don't know how I overlooked it earlier. Congratulations! If you are successful at raising multiple broods to adolescence, I am sure you will find no problem in selling one or two to every member of RF.

screw ID, and a lighting safty question

I recommend making sure the nut and bolt are stainless steel to ensure no rusting. I have seen too many "galvanized" srews, bolts, and nuts rust in a high moisture environment that is a saltwater aquarium.

    Stocking suggestions for school

Interesting. I was told that the green chromis will only get to be ~3" in size, so I figured I could get away with a half dozen or so. How big do they really get? How big do the pajama cardinals get? On a related vein, what is the best site to find information on fish species, such as mature...

    Stocking suggestions for school

I may be a noob, but I know enough to agree with James. No chance I would even considering trying to school any tang in a 75 gallon tank. ...Now maybe when I get my 900 gallon.....

    Calcium too high?

There are members of this board from all over, but the majority are from the Puget Sound area. Most questions are answered very quickly.

    Calcium too high?

Don't know the answer to your question, but welcome to RF! The only way to lower Ca that I know of is to do water changes (or add a couple hundred clams :) ).

Freshwater dip to remove rock crabs?

When I set up my nano tank, the rock I purchased was infested with rock crabs. I thought all had been removed, but unfortunately this was not the case. I have killed some, although there are still some I can't get to. What is the best way to rid live rock of these creatures before they go in my...

    Stocking suggestions for school

I am slowly closing in on stocking my tank. I know that I am going to have a couple of clown fish. My wife would like something that will school together. The tank is a 48x18x20, 75 gallon. It will be a reef tank with a mixture of sps, lps, and a few softies. I had thought about green chromis...

    Moonlights: Good, bad, ugly?

After reading through this thread so far, and knowing that I want moonlights on my tank, here is what I have decided to do. Since I am home mostly at night, I will run my regular lighting until about 9 pm. This gives me a chance to observe everything in my tank in the early evening with the...
