That is fine for a FO tank or softies but if you decide to go with harder to keep corals like sps you shouldn't leave the sock in the water that long.

Are you saying that filter socks should be changed regularly if you have SPS, or that they should be used infrequently?

I know that by leaving them on, the detritus will continue to break down into phosphates/nitrogens.

Either / or, nothing wrong with keeping a clean sock I would just clean it often or swap it out with another while cleaning one.

Thanks. I can't believe how much crap I'm getting caught in my sock, and with only 9 small fish in my 75 gallon. I plan on keeping it on until it doesn't look so bad.

I have 2 sets that I use. I use one for 3 days and change it out with the next set. That way I don't have to wait on the washing machine as I always have one set clean. So yeah, they are reusable and really don't ever wear out as long as you don't use a ton of bleach when you clean them.

Matt, do you turn them inside out before the wash? Mix them in with other clothes after a light rinse? They seem to be doing a good job. TIA

I have always washed mine seperately from everythign else and i always turn them inside out. Be sure to rinse them well first though.

I just take the filter socks out of the sump and toss them directly into the washing machine by themselves. I don't bother turning them inside out or anything. I have a high power front loading washer though that gets them spotless so it's going to depend on what your washing machine can do! I also put a little bit of bleach in to kill anything that could be in them.

If you can turn them inside out then I'd do it but the ones we use are a little small to do that with. Actually I haven't really tried.

Well that is good about the tank! a 180 would be perfect.....

I bought one of these incase I needed to use a filter sock for any length of time, but it just hangs on your sump and the filter sock sits in it.

Matt, Scooter, Shallowreef, thanks for the filter sock washing tips. I delicately threw them in the front loader with the wife's delicates, put a bit of oxy-clean in, and all came out fresh and white. Re-rinsed in RO water make sure after all done. That was just too easy. Now if I could just get my own whites as clean
