    Underwater Dining in the Maldives...

Oh how much I'd give to eat lobster under the sea. Awesome! :)

    1st corals this time round

Nice pic! :) At this point, I wouldn't worry about the iodine. Just keep up on your weekly water changes and you'll be fine. As for the mag, I test monthly. It does fall relatively slow, but if it's low it can drive your calcium level down. Or, not allow it to come up. So yes, it does...

    Cyano algae?

 Yeah, most LFS aren't up to snuff on a lot of stuff. TDS meters are fairly inexpensive. I got mine for $30. It's really a handy tool to let you know what's going on with your fresh water. :) Here's a good place to pick one up. http://www.thefilterguys.biz/tds_meters.htm

    xenias are not pulsing now

Yes, there is an Iodine test but honestly I've never tested or dosed iodine. Never had the need. IME, there is little need for such dosing if you keep up on your weekly water changes. ;)

is high calcium a bad thing???

For my tank, here's what I do on a daily/weekly basis. Daily: I dose a measured amount of Randy's DIY 2-Part each day to keep up with alkalinity/calcium demand. I found out my tanks demand by testing then using the calculator to dial in the dosage. Weekly: I do a 10-15% water change with...

is high calcium a bad thing???

The best way to help normalize a system is to do a water change. But, some salt mixes, such as Instant Ocean, run chronically low in calcium. That is where it needs to be supplimented. As for the Kalk... Never try to adjust calcium by adding Kalkwasser. This will ultimately end up with...

    Cyano algae?

Ok. They also might be implementing some other types of filtration that you might not be at this point. A properly functioning RO/DI filter will produce pure water with 0 TDS (measureable). That would be optimal to limit nutrients coming from the water source. Just to give you an example...

    xenias are not pulsing now

Unfortunately there aren't many electronic tests available. I do, however, monitor pH with my controller. You can also buy a pH meter, Pinpoint is a good brand. Here's what I do... Salifert Test Kits Alkalinity Calcium Magnesium Phosphate Nitrate Other Tests pH monitoring done with...

    Cyano algae?

Ok, is it RO or RO/DI? And can they test the TDS for you?

    Good or Bad thing?

is high calcium a bad thing???

Sounds with that kind of load you'll be able to get by with either 2-part or Kalk. Glad to help. Just for your reference, all the articles you've been given can be found here... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=102605

    Good or Bad thing?

No problem. Anything to save a zoa. :D I would keep an eye out for more though. They are stealthy little creatures. If you notice your zoas closing up or getting munched you know what to look for. ;)

    xenias are not pulsing now

Yeah, just give them time. My silver tip xenia took a full week to start pulsing. Now mine pulse like crazy. A little eye candy for you in the mean time. :D

Welcome to Reef Frontiers, pitmam01! :D

    bottom substrate

I would use an aragonite sand. Crushed coral substrates tend to collect detritus that can lead to nitrate issues. Is this going to be a FOLWR or REEF tank?

So what do sponges actually do?

Dr. Shimek can explain it much better than I. :D http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-06/rs/index.php And a good Podcast. ;) http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2006/10/podcast
