    salinity calibration

[minor thread drift...] Actually... it was more of a joke than being serious! I think the ones marketed to homebrewers just have different scales on them (Brix, potential alcohol) along with the SG. As far as I know, SG is SG... regardless of the fluid being measured. I've used my...

    salinity calibration

Agree... with a perfect unit with no slope error, it wouldn't matter where you calibrate it. Now if I'm using it to check the SG of my homebrew... that's a totally different calibration fluid!:D

    salinity calibration

That's not right... unless of course you want to check water to make sure its 1.000. Not arguing what you were told - just that you shouldn't do it that way. Use the calibration fluid and set it at that - that's the range you're measuring. For example, when my refractometer is spot on with the...

    Underwater Nightlights hopefully actinic 03

I haven't seen anything, but it doesn't mean they don't exist. The only thing I've seen sold as submersible are those little "accent" LEDs that are just for the "gee whiz" factor and not really meant to be "lighting". I'm really not thinking anything like what you want exists. Even if it did, I...

    Plate Coral?

In addition to what Sid said, Heliofungia is referred to as a "long tentacled plate coral", and Fungia is referred to as "short tentacled plate coral". Other than tentacle length, they're pretty much the same when it comes to care - on the sand bed with low to moderate flow.

What kind of coral is this?

Oh... and placement. Forgot about that part of your question! If it *is* Astreopora, I *think* it's going to want fairly good light and good flow.

What kind of coral is this?

I wouldn't argue with Astreopora... looks a lot like it.

    Ranco Temp Sensor

You might want to set it a little higher than 80... those heater thermostats aren't that accurate and you might be cutting it too close and it won't turn on. It's something you'll just have to play with since each heater is different. Assuming your heater has a light that turns on to show when...

    Ranco Temp Sensor

You need the heaters set higher than the Ranco or they'll never come on. I have my controller set for 78, but have the heaters themselves dialed in to 84 or so as upper limit "safety".

    planaria?

The other thing to do is just siphon them out with water changes. Eventually you'll get the population down and they'll disappear. Or if you want to go on a hunting expedition, just attach a filter sock (or some pantyhose) to the outlet end of your siphon hose, suck them out into the sock, and...

Can these corals sting each other?

Duncans? I thought those were at the bottom of the barrel when it came to aggressiveness and stinging ability? Did they take something of yours out? Mine hasn't gotten too close to anything yet, but the day is coming soon...

    Arrivals 3/21-3/26

Have to say that I really like those star astreas I bought a few weeks back. Maybe it's just me, but they seem "less clumsy" than the normal astreas. Yeah... I've had to pick a couple up off the sand, but nothing like the regular ones.

LOL.... I was wondering how long it was going to take for you to respond to that quote!

    Any Ideas what this is?

Pretty sure they're digitate hydroids. I have (had?) one in my tank that I haven't seen for a while. They're like hairy strings that can extend and retract themselves quite quickly and respond to light by "hiding". Very strange thing to watch. They're supposedly "bad", but the one I have/had...

    Weird Growth Identification Please

Not bad at all... they'll come and go as the nutrients come and go. (I've always heard of them as "Q-tip sponges". I like "pineapple sponges" better!)

    tank size help needed...

Yeah... it's called I'm at work sitting in front of my CAD station! Or you can dust off the geometry books and break it down into triangles and rectangles, but hey... I'm feeling lazy!

    tank size help needed...

Oh... a diamond like THAT! Yeah... those dims work. Looks like you've got about 53 gallons.

    tank size help needed...

Need more info for an accurate answer because you're not telling us any dimensions of the "pointy" end of the tank. I'm guessing it looks like a pentagon (5 sides), but the steepness of the angled end will make a difference. With that said though... it's probably between 65 and 75 gallons, give...

    I'd say Trachyphyllia then.
