    tank heating

My Jager heater runs about 7 degree warm, and its better to be safe than sorry. Use a controller if you can even if its a reliable brand. -Dylan

    Algae ID?

Ah, you're right. That's the one. Thanks. Now I just need to figure out how to get rid of it. =) -Dylan

    Algae ID?

I thought it might be Botryocladia at first, but there's no stem at all, its growing in clusters directly on the rock/glass and never up. The actual bubble certainly looks correct though. You're definitely right on the Mesophyllum though, thanks. Gives me something to research. -Dylan

    Sunday Night Chat

I was actually just thinking that I hadn't made on them these in a while. Sadly, I have a massage scheduled at 7pm, (oh damn, what a bummer. I love having friends in massage school who need practice). Hopefully another weekend. =) -D

    Algae ID?

I have a couple algae types I'd like to get an ID on if somebody can. The first is a red bubble algae that's been spreading like valonia. It grows red initially in small clumps, but appears to turn whitish as it matures. It contains a gel-like substance inside, rather than watery like...

New posts doesn't search for sale forums?

I just noticed that the "New Posts" link doesn't search on the for sale/trade forums. Is that deliberate? I'm trying to find a search method to do the same thing including those forums, but I don't see any way other than that button to search on new posts. -Dylan

    Potoshop my clam

I tried to pull some of the blue out, but since that's a majority of the color data I couldn't get much without losing all the detail. A little sharpening helped, but its pretty difficult with the resized image. I could probably do a lot better with the fullsized one. -Dylan

    Power outage again

I saw the Coleman 5500 at Costco yesterday and was tempted to buy one. When you get a chance to use it, can you post here about your impressions of the quality and the like? -Dylan

    Blue

If you have Photoshop, you can approximate a white balance change by using Levels (or better, Curves) and reducing the blue channel, since 20k lights cause a blue cast across the entire image. If you use that, you'll likely need to leave at least some of the blue cast in place to preserve the...

    aquariums in upstairs apartments

Will renter's insurance cover aquariums? I've heard mixed opinions on that and homeowner's. -Dylan

    Bulletproof Reef:Tips for Avoiding wipeout

Harbor Freight has some good inexpensive generators as well. You don't need the high quality output required for things like computers with a reef (unless you're powering a controller, in which case you should probably have a UPS on it) -Dylan

    septic

Have you had any issues with the salt leeching off the driveway and into stuff next to it? -D

    septic

It makes sense that it would hurt the bacteria in a septic tank. I'm kinda curious as to what people with septic systems are doing to dispose of large amounts of water change water, since it kills any vegetation in the area you dispose it as well. -Dylan

What size ups for back up power?

I powered my Nano Stream and a 150W heater for about 4 hours during the power outage using a 3kVA Liebert UPS. I imagine it would have gotten a much longer runtime on a 50W. That said, that's a fairly expensive UPS, you're better off getting a generator. -Dylan

    Storm tales losses saves???

I borrowed a generator from my boss when I saw the tank temperature on my nano at about 55 degrees and it hadn't had any aeration other than manually moving around some water for about 36 hours. (Actually, I had a nano-stream and a heater running for about 3 hours in the middle, so not 36 hours...

    battery operated heater

Heaters draw a lot of power. One thing you can do is draw some remaining hot water from your water heater and float that in the tank. That helped keep my tank in the 70s for at least a while. -Dylan

    May need some help!!

I hear ya. I borrowed a 3kVA UPS from work that ran my nano-stream and a small heater for 4 hours, but my tank has been without heating or circulation at all for 12 hours now. Getting a generator in about 2 hours, but I think things might be a lost cause. Hope your tank survives! -Dylan

Post your tank size and flow numbers

Whoo boy! Just upgraded to the Tunze 6025. Boy does that thing move some water around. I'm hoping its not too much. My big frilly mushroom looked pretty unhappy at first, but its already pumped back up to more or less full size (lights turned out, so its hard to say). My LPS (Favia...
