    The elusive berghia

Anyone know if a red coris wrasse would eat berghias? I've been considering getting some berghias to control my aiptasia, but don't want to just throw money away and have my wrasse eat them. They're rumored to eat the zoanthid eating nudibranch, so I don't see why they wouldn't also eat...

Ugg that sucks Duane, so close :(. I'll likely upgrade to that unit down the road. I have an RKL now.

    Eheim 1260

I have a 1250, not a 1260 but I removed the foam filter from mine. It works fine. I also placed a neoprene beer cozy under the pump to dampen the vibration. Mine's quieter than my skimmer pump, which I believe is a Sedra 3500.

    DA Reef Keeper Elite

You got my vote Duane. You'll have to let me borrow that zapper some time. I had great success with a raccoon butterfly. He decimated all majanos and aiptasia...and then he turned on my large derasa and various SPS. I had to get rid of him, but it took 3 weeks to catch him. Within weeks of...

Can nuidibranchs such as these be maintained in a home reef

I'm pretty sure all nudibranchs are carnivorous with highly specialized diets. They usually only eat one single thing. For example, Berghias will eat aiptasia but not majano or other pest anemones. Sea hares and lettuce nudibranchs are not actually nudibranchs. They're just called that...

Are Kalk Reactors really worth the risk???

I use a kalk reactor fed by ATO. I haven't dealt with any failures. Here's how mine's setup. I have a 5g bucket with a float valve to restrict it to only hold about a gallon of water at a time. This bucket is fed directly from my RO/DI unit. The bucket also has a hole in the bottom with a...

    Sometimes it just happens..

That sucks, I feel for you. I used to have a nice big Cali Tort about 6" tall with 8-10 good sized branches. I came home one day and found 60% of it white. I tried to frag as much as I could but all the frags died within a couple weeks. I believe it was caused by a majano or aiptasia sting at...

Largest hammer ever in a tank.

Another good alternative for clown homes is toadstool leathers as there's no danger of them stinging and killing your SPS.

Largest hammer ever in a tank.

When I saw this thread title I thought to myself "it's probably not as big as the one I saw at Neptune's in Denver" where I lived prior to 2003. Turns out it's one and the same. They did have a big female gold stripe maroon in an anemone in that as well, along with a little male GSM. It's a...

    Berghia Sharing in Northend

I'd be willing to try them out when they do their thing in your tank. I'm a little worried that my red coris wrasse will eat them, though. I had a raccoon butterfly decimate my aiptasia and majano a few months ago. I got rid of him because he started killing corals, and now I have aiptasia...

    Little white creatures!!!!!!

While I think you're right in that they're snail eggs, I don't think astreas lay eggs. I'm pretty sure they broadcast spawn. Nerite snails are the ones that leave the annoying white things on the glass. Whether they're eggs or snail poop, I don't know, but it's definitely nerites that leave them.

how high to mount my mh

Height depends on reflector as well. I've seen many people recommend that Lumen Brites be placed so that the bulb is 16-18 above the water. That's how I have mine. I love having the bulbs that high off the water. Gives me lots of room to work when I need to get into the tank.

    quiet auto feeder?

I use the Eheim unit as well. It's very quiet and can be programmed to feed up to 4 times a day. Plus, you can set it to spin twice for each feeding if you want to. If so, it will spin once, then wait one minute and spin again. Very handy. My only complaint is that it runs on batteries. I'd...

    my zoa's are sick

Those white things on the glass are from nerite snails. It's either eggs or snail poop. They're really hard to scrap off the glass and is the reason I'd never get nerite snails again. You can see the nerite snail right to the right of them. I saw someone else mention that their cleaner shrimp...

    do aptasia move?

    All anemones can move.

Anyone want to loan Aptasia Eater for lots of great SPS Frags

No problem Dang. I'd get that last crocea out of there if I was you before the aiptasia runs out. Should be easy to cut the gland with a razor or sharp knife, as I know it's attached to the glass. That raccoon loves clams.

Anyone want to loan Aptasia Eater for lots of great SPS Frags

Interestingly, that raccoon did not bother ricordea or goniopora in my tank. My clownfish may have protected the goniopora, although that is not their primary home (they like toadstool leathers) and I never witnessed the raccoon take an interest in it. Which reminds me, the raccoon also pecked...

Anyone want to loan Aptasia Eater for lots of great SPS Frags

The raccoon in Dang's frag tank previously was in my display. He will destroy aiptasia and majano with great enthusiasm. However, once those were gone, he killed a few stylophora colonies and irritated many zoanthids (don't think he actually killed them but may have if left in the tank long...

Anyone use a UPS for power outages?

Thanks all for the advice. I just ordered 2 of these. I'll use one for each tank to run small powerheads. I figure I'll also plug in a battery powered air pump to each, so that if I have an extended outage, the air pumps will turn on when the UPS battery dies.

Anyone use a UPS for power outages?

It went out a little after midnight. I woke up because my backup air pump is pretty loud. I noticed that all the other apartments were dark, too. It came back on around 1:15am. Have you tested that UPS to see how long it will run? What do you power with it? Just a powerhead?
