Changing the Light bulbs... DOes it ReAlly Matter???

My noob question: So what's the standard life cycle of VHO and MH bulbs? I bought my 250wt MH (single end) bulb 5 months ago.... (but my (2) 48" VHO actincts came used with the tank--so I'm not sure how old they are....)

Is that a discount for RF members or PSAS members?

    what thickness glass?

(I've never had a custom tank built but....) First question, are you sure this "end table" is sturdy enough?!! a 2'x2'x3' tank = 12 cubic ft = 90 gallons of water = at least 740 lbs!! (and that doesn't include the weight of the tank itself, plus the weight of the sand/live rock you'll want to...

    Getting out of the hobby

You might want to post this in the Equipment/Livestock For Sale forums too....

    Help!!!!

--If the "Little rocks" are small--like pellets or pea gravel size or smaller then they are probably are some form of concentrated calcium chloride and like others said, it should be mixed with filtered water first. (And dosed according to package directions, or by using this helpful online...

    Academy awards sucked!

I got so bored with the whole thing, that I left the room and started doing a W/C--My blenny was way more entertaining! (Though I thought the bit with Ellen and Clint Eastwood(and Steven Spielburg) in the audience was pretty funny!) And watching Martin S. finally get his statue was good...

i made a real bonehead move

Yes, IME. I originally bought muriatic acid to clear hazy buildup off of a 55 project tank--and it didn't damage the silicone--no visible change to the seams and the tank has been filled many times since then w/o issue. (Of course the acid didn't take the haze off either!--neither did...

    HOB Closed Loop w/Manifold return

Are you going to use your SCWD on that HOB closed loop? (I've had this idea rolling around in my head for a while....) Thinking about using a SCWD on a closed loop, by adding a check valve inline to the loop.... That way when 1 "side" of the loop is charged; it flows through all the ports but...

    Flow?

You can usually find alot of people selling those SCWDs used on this board (in fact I've got one sitting on a shelf in my garage right now) They work okay--but they don't "create" any flow--just divert it in alternating directions.... So you'll want to buy a pretty big external pump (probably...

    broken center brace!

Whoa, Yeah... that would have given me a lump in my throat, or felt like a slap in the face or something! I'd be skeered too! (BTW: I don't think I said it before) It is a good looking "re-mod" even without the acrylic! :)

    broken center brace!

This is a glass tank right? w/ no center brace, not sure what all the fuss is about... I bought a used 80 gallon reef tank where the center brace had been removed by the previous owner...never had a problem with it. (To make matters even worse--the guy had this 80 gallon tank sitting on an...

    clean hands

I second the long-glove-approach, they're great! I bought a 50 pack of disposable shoulder-length gloves for about $10 from seller "djtinman" on eBay. (they're pretty big--I actually slide a smaller latex glove over them for better fingertip grips....but other than that they work pretty well.)

    "Innovative" Moon lights?

Anyone have any experience with the LED "Moontubes" w/ moon-cycle controller made by by "Fishbowl Innovations"? I'd like to add some moon-lighitng to my tank--figured having them on that "29.5 day cycle" would be the most "natural" way to do it... What I'm really looking from is feedback from...

    Crocea Clam DANGERS

So 2 of RF's best clam-keepers have low pH, huh! Is that just a coincidence, or THE SECRET to keeping great clams...hmmm...

    Crocea Clam DANGERS

Don-- I know you've often advised us newbies to pull off our pH monitors and not be too concerned about daily pH swings.... Are your beautiful clams exposed to AM/PM pH swings (or do you have some form of pH-stablizing gear--kalk, fuge with reverse photo, etc.--on your tank)?? And as a...

    Technically Challenged in Lynnwood, WA

Wow! Mag 9.5 in a Brute can while mixing--That's a lot of pump!:eek2: It must be like a blender in that can! Do you have to SNAP ON the lid to keep the water from sloshing everywhere! I use just a Mag 2 during WCs... (to pump the fresh saltwater from my garage Brute can, across the...

    How Do You Eliminate Aiptasia?

Just be careful not to nuke your shroom, Gaby--slimy mushrooms are not fun! (before my shrimp got hungry--I used a $5 "Flavor Injector" that I got at one of those "Bed, Bath, Linen, Beyond, and Things" stores). ;) The Flavor Injector (aka 30 ml syringe) was nice--less time needed for...

    Crocea Clam DANGERS

Thanks, those pics were very helpful! (Mine remind me of the snails in my old FW tanks-- too boring, so I never took much notice...I'll double-check tonight, but I doubt they're sundials--they're much smaller, but I think I would have noticed that unique spiral shape!):)

    Crocea Clam DANGERS

(Hitching-on because I'm also planning on making a clam my next tank addition) Which snails pose problems for clams? (apart from the parasitic pyramids, of course...) My tank currently has a mixed bag of Ceriths, Nassarius, Nerites, and a couple of not-upside-down Astreas left---plus a bunch of...
