    Caulerpa Problems Poll

By Northstarquatics: "I can't find a good ID anywhere. - macrodisca var. ? " I've been calling THAT one racemosa var peltata (page 46 "Marine Plants of the Caribbean"), but I really have no clue. All I know is that its a bastard. And I don't even know how it got in the tank, it just showed up...

    Caulerpa Problems Poll

I've mucked about with 3 specie of Caulerpa. IME, all of these were undesirable for the display tank. One, racemosa var peltata, is especially difficult to control in the display. I like plants and purposely keep several in the display, but I just can't recommend any caulerpa that I've...

    Possibly the end

I think you understand now Brett, but I'll make some comments for those people following the thread. When you add the CaOH (= lime = "kalk")to your freshwater, you can agitate it mechanically to speed up the dissolution of the CaOH. I think this is what the directions meant by "well mixed"...

    Possibly the end

Don't worry about restocking the coral in tank. Much of the coral stock in my tank was given to me and I can easily fragment some to help start a new tank. You'll find most people who have been at this hobby more than a couple of years will help out. Just PM the people (like myself) who have...

    seagrass themed tank

I’ll try to give some information sources on Seagrass communities. I’ll follow that with some pictures in my next post. Smithsonian (Fort Pierce) Seagrass Habitat Page Be sure to follow the links to seagrass specie descriptions at the bottom of the page. Also has an extensive...

    seagrass themed tank

I keep a lagoonal tank with seagrass and other sandbed plants (Udotea, Penicillus, Halimeda). Remember that these plants need relatively intense, broad spectra illumination, like EYE 6500K. They are not as photoadaptive as coral. So the coral you keep with them need to be able to adapt to the...

How to get rid of algae

Remove the rock from the tank, pull off what algae you can by hand, scrub the areas where you want to control the algae with a wire brush, rinse the rock briefly using old tank water or freshwater to rinse off the organic debri, and return it to the tank. You have just simulated grazing the...

Stimulating reproduction by anthocauli in cycloseris/fungia

Wow. I only got one at a time, just at the damaged border. You could go into business producing that many. Did you stimulate the parent to die off, or what? There must be some residual tissue that gives rise to the buds?

Stimulating reproduction by anthocauli in cycloseris/fungia

I've gotten 2 anthocauli, incidentally, from a Cycloseris purchased in bad shape with major recession in one section. The anthocauli came from the border of the healthy flesh and the skeleton. I've also split the same Cycloseris, accidentally, while trying to cut out the damaged section...

    PSAS Annual Frag Swap Time!!!!!

I won't make the frag swap, but I have several easy-to-keep stony coral fragments ready for pickup in Bremerton Friday/Saturday of this week. For you West-sounders, the list is here. PM me if you are interested, I won't be following this thread. Thanks.

    Orange Finned Tang

Better pic in Sepember's RTOTM article in RK mag, just up today. Considered this fish myself. Read in one source its fiercely territorial, but have read several personal accounts that it is peaceful. Note the max length at about 5", much smaller than most surgeons.

    Orange Finned Tang

The Tomini tang? This is a smaller bristletooth tang somewhat similar to the Kole, with yellow-orange fins.

    magnifying tool

I use a 10X-20X eye loop. It's a Russian make, good quality, and was purchased cheaply from Harbor Freight Tools. It comes with a stand that allows me to place it against the aq glass and focus on the micro critters on the tank side of the glass. I also use it to examine things removed from...

    Do You Quarantine?

Except for 1 occasion, I've always QTd fish into this tank. This is mainly to prevent ich and Almyoodinium. I try for a 4-week QT. For grazing fish that may be difficult to get to take prepared foods like a mandarin, QT has been as short as 2 weeks. I try to set up the tank to give such fish...

    Let's Talk About ~Reefkeeping Dangers~

I have long grabbers (doesn't everybody?) that keep me from touching the water in many cases when I need to work in the tank. But it's innevitable that you will periodically have to dive in. I wear thin, disposable latex gloves when I handle corals and other "soft" organisms. When I'm doing...

    Clam Identification

It was my experience with M. doorensis that it could burn clams. Other potent stinging inverts, like Favids, don't seem to. Nematocysts can be specific and maybe an LTA has nematocysts specific to molluscs and a BTA doesn't, I don't know.
