Recent Drought Anouncement in Washington State

Actually Vivki, the salt water will kill the grass. It works as a good ground killer too.

Recent Drought Anouncement in Washington State

I always thought that it was getting ready to rain, raining, or just getting over raining there on the "wet" side of the state, :D :D Maybe a drought is what's needed to dry out all that moss. :D

    Mix Lights?

Yes Zul, I have a used 400 watt ballast. You'll need a bulb and reflector with socket.

    Mix Lights?

I'd go for another 400 Mh.

Air bubbles inside a Saltwater tank.

Ed, If you want to see bubbles collecting proteins and stuff, come and check out my LRCT. The excess amount of bubbles coming off the skimmer has caused a large amount of foam on the top of the water and this foam looks like the crap you see washed up along the sea shore. P.S. The LRCT is a...

    protien skimmer question

Take the $50 bucks and add it to some more for a ETSS or a Euro Reef. Just my opinion though.

    CL water flow recommendations....

You will want to figure out what the head loss through the Oceans Motions valve is. Contact the manufacture if all else fails. For every pump there is a total dynamic head available. As the head pressure increases the total flow decreases. If the Ocean Motions valve acts like a venturi/eductor...

    Sump Flow Rate Debate.

Ok All, Here is what I decided to go with. After testing the closed loops systems on my new tank last evening (I shot waves over the opposite wall). I will rely on 3 closed loops pumps for tank flow/current. I will use a Dolphin DP 900 for the sump return pump that I can close down to app. 1/2...

    Sump Flow Rate Debate.

And then what about the refugium? Should I skim the water to it or from it or just pump back to the tank?

    Sump Flow Rate Debate.

So Don, In my new 400 gallon setup, with a skimmer rated at 800 GPH, would it be advisable to reduce the sump flow to 400 GPH? If I were to do this then what about the refugium? would that flow be "tee'd" off of the 400 GPH line or should it be a separate feed? The more I think about this the...

    Sump Flow Rate Debate.

I flow 4000GPH throughout my sump for my 175 tank. The skimmer seems to do a good job, the heaters rarely come on, (due to two 400 watt MH) and cooling isn't much of a concern. I have a few points to make here, DonW stated that flow rate through or around a heater has a greater heating...

    Pump Question

I like the comparison of the double flush. We have all seen a toilet that had to be flushed twice to dispose of the waste. Why not just get a better one or properly adjust it so it only takes once. Don,    I gotta say that comparing a tank let alone mine to a toilet...

    Pump Question

Don, When you tested for organics and found them climbing or generally higher, did you notice any effect on you tank inhabitants?

    Pump Question

Don, The only thing I really picked up on that link was that a person should have the most efficient skimmer possible and the skimmer seems to work better at removing DOC's if the skimmer flow rate is 2-3 time the sump flow rate. That being said, how would a person know if your flow rate is to...

    Pump Question

NO. The dirty water coming off your overflow goes to the sump, from there it is either skimmed or returned dirty back to the tank. If the flow is to high its just going to zing by the skimmer and go back in dirty. The idea is to try to match the flow to the skimmer, this way you get more of the...

    Pump Question

To all of you undecided folks out there; buy the most pump and flow diverters you can afford. If planning on an SPS tank then go high, if going softie then maybe not to high of flow. On my new 400 gallon it will have about 245 GPM (not GPH) distributed throughout the tank. Just my opinion.

When did hearsay become proven science??

I'm of the opinion that there are as many ways/methods of keep a captive reef as there are species in the ocean. Why every time I turn around someone somewhere has made a new discovery, be it a new method or a new species. I have also stated, and will stand by this statement that there are only...

    Skimmer Experience

The busted pieces were I'm sure from rough handling. This skimmer was just to get me started on the new tank. I do plan on building a "Mojo" style later on.

    Pump Recommendation

Not every person in the hobby thinks that Sequence is the pump of choice or the only thing to use. That being said, I have no problem with them whatsoever.
