    Some plumbing for Sabella

I'll second the combo ref/sump idea too. That sounds like too much trouble to get to equipment down there, so I would not put anything there. I've learned that if it is not easy to check, it does not get done. You might try a small hang-on-tank refuge like what CPR makes too. Of course you...

    Some plumbing for Sabella

Lol- You are correct so far- The system must be balanced perfectly though, it is not "inherently stable" to minor changes over time. i.e. without the refuge, it does not matter how much water the sump return pump moves, it will always balance out as the tank will overflow as much water as is...

    400 Gal sunroom reef

Jesse- Very nice setup, I really like the steel beam setup. I have a few questions: Did you have the deflection calculations on beams? What was the max deflection in the center? It looks like you painted it with an epoxy paint, did it work out well? I am guessing that the sunroom room is...

    Ground Probe

Maybe- You are talking about a direct short from hot to ground, though the salt water. There is a good chance that the breaker would have popped. If you had a GFCI, it would have thrown too. Adding a ground probe means that when the tank gets energized (broken heater, lights, etc) the...

    Mounting an Iwaki Pump

In general you can mount them with the inlet pointing up. I've seen warnings about cavitating if mounted with the inlet down. In theory if you could get it primed when mounted inlet down it might be fine, but I would not risk the longer term headache of having it loose its prime. Zeph

    Some plumbing for Sabella

Mike- You have the tank draining in to the sump and the refuge, then a pump going from the refuge to the sump. That pump will not be able to be balanced against the drain water from the main tank. You've created a system where one open loop feeds a second open loop. If one of them changes...

    Eggcrate tank covers.

Note that it does not keep dartfish and similar in either- I've lost a couple of scissortail gobies though it over the years. Zeph

    Mojo's Airtones Clone Skimmer =)

Laird plastics if you are buying in volume. Check mcmaster.com if you just want a few feet though- Not as price competitive, but you can by just 2 feet. Zeph

    Keyhole flange series ?

Try Mcmaster.com too- large selection, and online prices. No problems with selling by the foot. Zeph

    Dummy award???

I'm skeptical of that one Charlie- Rust is from reacting with Oxygen, and there is certainly oxygen in the water… Zeph

    Thanks so much!!!

Just pulled Kevin's pictures off the camera today- Jean-Paul's are on a CD in the car for him. I'll get a gallery thrown up some day soon for them, like I did for Kevin's last year. Brent

    Help needed on Moonlighting

BTW- Costco is selling LED flashlights with a while Luxeon LED. Nice pair in an aluminum case. I'm using them for spot-lighting corals to take pictures with- The light really makes the metallic colors show up well. Not sure why, but even bristle worms have metallic green spots on them under...

    refugium ideas

Don- I disagree that Weldon 40 is the glue to use- #4 and #16 are far easier to use, and are more than adequate for any sump/refuge setup. Using the two part #40 is just tougher to use. Besides, the fumes it gives off smell worse. ;) The CPR hang on refuge is a good idea if you don't want to...

    My new 180 G

For the price of a MBV, you could get an Oceans Motions device. More outputs makes for a more random water flow, plus you support a small company that is developing new products for us. :) I've not used one yet, but have plans to put one in when I get a new tank put together. I like the...

    Beckett Injector

Don- They are still made, but they were removed from Beckett's product line that is available at stores. They can be ordered directly from Beckett in bulk though, without all the fancy packaging. 25 piece minimum. I've got a order in to them now for my own uses. Zeph

    anyone culturing phyto or rotifers?

Aaron and Mat- I've been working on plans for a phyto reactor setup, but need to run some ideas past people that have more experience. Mind if I drop you a PM or two asking for some input? Zeph
