    Lighting for SPS

Right about 8" give or take. I remeber years ago it was highly recomended to have a UV resistant sheet of acrylic between the bulbs and the water. I have been told by my LFS that todays bulbs have some type of uv filter in the glass itself. I really need to know as I dont want my SPS bleaching...

    Real time photo period

I would agree with the notion hat we are re-creating the natural reef systems that our critters come from.I cannot remember of hearing of any tropic coral reefs way up here in the PNW I think you would have troubles with any SPS or LPS you may be keeping.Photoperiod would be inadequete

    Phosphate

Not sure but a good way to test your carbon is take what you have and put a couple of tablesppons into a small container with RO water after a few days test it with a relaible PO4 test kit. This will tell you if the carbon you are using is leaching PO4 into your tank. I use Coralife coconut and...

    Kalkwasser Rip Off

Yea I agree. Pickling lime is just as good as overpriced kalkwasser brands. Slap a reef name on it and there goes the price. As for the heavy metal argument I would like to see the data source that makes this claim. Mrs wages food grade is safe for reef use. Remember kalkwasser is German for...

    Phosphate

Another great way to export phophates is using macroalgae in your sump. Chaetomorpha is great stuffAll living organism contain phosphorus. Phosphorus is an important element of live as a component for cell membranes, as an energy source, and for other bio-chemical processes. Phosphorus is a...

    cloudy water????

Julian Sprung tests his carbon by taking a strip of white plastic and dipping it in the tank and looking thru the glass and when the strip looks like it is yellow time to change the carbon. This is the way I do it.

    need a calcium reactor

GEO.... solid build design. George is really helpful with any issues you may have getting it dialed in. GEO actually recomends larger Shuran type media for all the reasons mentioned already due to smaller ARM and others clogging easily. GEO is a snap to clean. Big point that helped me decide...

Are 400W halides overkill for me?

Brian, Did not here you mention what your gallonage is for your tank. The rule of thumb and of course it is not set in stone but typically it is recomended for a range of 3-5 wats per gallon of water, So say you have a 100 gallon tank then anywhere between 300-500 watts should be fine. Although...

    AutoTOpoff.com

You might consider getting a double switch setup. That way if one fails the other can shut things down if # one fails. I have seen tanks get flooded with fresh water and dropping salinity out of control. It will aslo keep you from flooding especially if your water source is large. The one...

    Acro's browning

Yep Kevin is right on best way to retain coral colors are to stick with tank raised frags. Wild caught as Kevin stated can brown out and some may never recover. Just one more reason to conserve the reefs and stick with hobbyist raised frags :)

    Water parameters correction chart Pleeeeeaaase!

I have a 120 and for the film and slight algaeal growth on the glass I have 6 Turbos and 6 Astrea's and they do an excellent job keeping up with the algae situation. ( Turbos have a rep for bulldozing tho so be careful your corals and such are planted or epoxied well as they can bowl over stuff)...

    Water parameters correction chart Pleeeeeaaase!

One thing I would suggest is cut back on the feddings and amounts. Too many nutrients spoil the soup :) The rest is all stuff you know you need skimmer etc. The calcium and alkalinity thing can be a little tricky at first. But as you go you will learn how to keep it balanced. It is critical that...
