    DIY needle wheel

I think most everyone now a days are making 'thread wheels' using Enkamat. The mesh is easier to work with than these disks.

    diy filter socks

Walmart evidently has the cheapest prices on the white felt (from what many have told me).

    not working like i planned

ecobalance, I believe you're on the right track, but with the wrong size plumbing. trido is right depending on what gph rate is feeding the bucket. A 2" bulkhead/plumbing is huge and would require a ton of flow in order to be used in this type of surge device. In order to be sure it would be...

    recirculating skimmer question

Oh ... I forgot to mention, since this will be an external skimmer ... if you happen to own (or can get your hands on) some thread taps, you may consider not using Uniseals. Uniseals are easy, inexpensive, and quick; but I usually trust threads more than I trust Uniseals.

    recirculating skimmer question

I don't know what skimmer plans you are interested in, but just to throw some ideas at ya, here's a set of plans to make a 6" diameter skimmer. I would suggest making this a recirculating skimmer like shown on this page. Basically merge both plans into one to create a 6" recirculating protein...

    DIY Vacuum?

I kept a 75 gal turtle tank (with 2 turtles) for quite a few years. Fresh water tanks can get quite DIRTY especially with 2 turtles! Anyways ... the sump kept getting REAL nasty even with a filter sock (fed by the overflow) so I just stuck a pump in the sump and plumbed it so that it dumped...

DIY- Converting my stand into a sump!

VERY NICE Eznet2u! I recently used Sani-Tred to seal my aquarium stand and it turned out GREAT! Here's the link.

    recirculating skimmer question

There's tons of cheap pumps out there ... do you have a specific design in mind? What dimensions are you considering? Octopus Needle Wheel Pumps and GenX Needle Wheel Pumps are a decent choice if you're thinking inexpensive. www.aquacave.com and www.customaquatic.com carries them. Let us know...

    External Durso thoughts or suggestions

Not too long ago I decided to consolidate a 55 gal tank (with a sump) and a 38 gal (with a sump) into a 75 gal tank. I definitely wanted to get away from using siphon overflows! Here's a link to my thread on Reef Central. It's as simple as it gets and it would appear to take up a lot of space...

    DIY needle wheel

I don't know if it was in this thread or not, but I've read where someone said that the abraisive is 'likely' aluminum oxide. Said it was bad for tanks. I've been meaning to try making one using the radial Roloc disks: You can buy them with a hole in the center and literally stack them on an...

    Diy Uv Light?

Most UV I've ever seen were opaque (non-transparent). All UVs I’ve seen also have a warning on them to NEVER look at the illuminated bulb. If it was built about as well as a manufactured UV ... I don't see why not.

    Diy Uv Light?

I know it doesn't look that hard and I thought about it more than once myself, but same as stated above ... you can buy even a JEBO cheapo for less than it would likely cost to make one. I think you would have to find a quartz sleeve to make it worth while and some fittings that would be...

    Different PVC Skimmer

I don't think anyone can argue too much the noise difference. Sedras are quieter. I think its just the difference in the impeller design. It isn't too loud under my stand ... the sucking/gurgling sound from the venturi is much louder than the pump itself. That's solved very easily. Video...

Cyano is growing in my fuge again

shallowreef, do you use RO/DI water? Hopefully you do. I had a serious battle with cyano which covered the back of my tank and beginning to cover all my rocks. I was using tap water/well water. I procrastinated getting an RO/DI unit for some time and just thought I needed to try all the LFS...
